Re the tough times our Western Societies are now in - the Occupy Wall Street movement has now started to spread across the world and its now in Britain too:

    http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk/video/2011/oct/15/occupy-london-st-pauls-cathedral

Thank goodness someone is "taking some action". I know enough about how people are "dealt with" to try and stop this by now - so I'm guessing the DWP will be sent in to start with to try and find anyone who is unemployed out of this and start deliberately hassling them (in order to occupy their time and "energy") more than they would do for other young unemployed people in the exact same situation. So - thats point 1 of what is likely to happen in return...

Fingers crossed it goes well with the protestors.
  • There was a fair few of you looking at the Ugg winter boots, I have just happened upon these - at £15 they may be a good alterative, I haven't purchased them, but we got our winter boots from Decathlon last years, and they were fab quality for the price.

  • Interesting to read about the protesters from more than one newspaper report. Their numbers have dwindled somewhat this morning. Good luck to them I say as long as they are peaceful. I have no sympathy for those who assaulted police officers yesterday :(. And the chap in the Guardian link mentions the threat of the DWP and states that he is able to search for work from an internet cafe while protesting. I'm afraid I do think that the DWP has the right to expect people to continue to look for work while receiving jobSEEKERs allowance. :)

Saw this story and failed to be moved to tears.

We have woken up to glorious sunshine when we were forecast 5 days of continuous rain so we will all be out making the most of that. :j

    a. No link there Jackie.

    b. Have you checked they are the "cruelty-free" ones? There was a recent article that some of the Ugg-alikes have been produced by very cruel methods (think 'twas skinning animals alive - whereas the "real deal" boots are sheepskin). I imagine my Ugg-alikes are okay - as were bought at the time from Marks & Sparks and cost a "standard" price level - rather than cheap.

Anyways - recent events bringing to mind cheap recipes for crowds for anyone requiring them:

  • Don't know about that Ceridwen, although they are synthetic through and through so I doubt any animals were affected in any direct way by their production. As a vegetarian, I don't wear leather or sheepskin, so Uggs were always a no-no to me.

EDIT actually, I was having a silly moment, it wasn't Uggs that were being discussed, it was Croc boots. :o

  • Morning all

Have not been able to read this week so I am back on page 7. Just wanted to say hi to all of the new posters and de lurkers. Will catch up with you all this morning as it is raining so will not be going to the lottie as planned.

lucielle for sloe gin I used the following recipe
450 g sloes either !!!!! with a fork to freeze for 24 hrs and defrost as this splits the skins
    170 g sugar
    75cl gin
    1lts sterilised jar.
Combine ingredients in the jar. Shake daily until the sugar has all dissolved then leave for at least 3 months, but the longer you leave it the better the taste.

    Mrs VP

Mine is looking good but have not tasted it yet.
I am playing all of the right notes just not necessarily in the right order :D.

Buy cheap bottle of gin and empty into large jug. Stab sloes all over with pin/needle and fill bottle with sloes. Add couple teaspoons sugar. Fill bottle with gin . Repalce cap and put in dark place. Gently tip up once a week. Its usually ready to drink 3-4 weeks.

I save nice shaped bottles for presents - or ask for them on freecycle - and have a few smaller bottles - as all the gin is unlikely to go back on bottle

My student DD1 persuaded me to buy the Mail on Sunday today as it has a double duvet offer in it. Through gritted teeth I bought one - wish I hadn't - offer is not that good in reality and as DD2 said - too good to be true! OK if you are a a Mail reader I guess. I shall be buying a duvet form the Marks basic range for her - excellent value I have found!
