Shelley - If you haven't tried already, give smelly chicken a wash before finally chucking it. Sometimes chook can get a bit sweaty in it's wrapper, and the smell is only superficial. A wash and if you are going to use it, a wipe over with a cut lemon does wonders!
I didn't think of that, maybe it was just sweaty. The smell wasn't as foul (:p) as it has been with off chicken, I find it really difficult to judge. I will definitely try this :money:0 -
I hope you took the chickens back - I have had this problem a few times - buy it, pop in the fridge (fridge is def cold enough) and a day or two later it stinks  I usually phone the store helpline (who then send vouchers) or take the chicken back if I am going past - I refuse to pay for food that goes off before its sell/use by date.
I did the last time, I was ready to use it for dinner but the smell from the fridge was horrid. I took it back to sainsburys and there was no denying it, the woman on customer services looked a bit green around the gills after my visit.0 -
I try to take chicken out of the plastic as soon as possible, if you can leave it in the fridge wrapped in greasproof paper it's a much better way to keep it (low down in the fridge where it is coldest and it can't drip onto cooked food)Think big thoughts but relish small pleasures0

I sent my ex-h back to the shop with an off chicken - they gave him a lecture on food hygiene! but he did get the money back

Another de-lurker here
I need to cut back more as DH is reducing his hours from next week so he can cope with his depression better0 -
I heard a very sensible discussion on Radio4 yesterday about how the government should force retirement at 60 to allow the young unemployed to get into the job market. Can't see it happening, but had to admire the logic in it.
That would be great if we could collect our state pensions. When I started my working life it was expected that women would retire at 60. Now I am nearing that age the goalposts have been moved and I can't get my pension until just before my 65th birthday. I would really LOVE to be able to retire and enjoy leisure time, instead of tramping into London daily.
Thanks to all who contribute. This is a wonderful thread.:T0 -
Ok, ok, ok...... another de-lurker here:o
OS-wise, I teach kids cookery lessons all day long. Doesn't get much more OS than that!!!
I have 6 chickens, an allotment that is proving challenging (has it been a bad year for HG veg or is it just me?), make my own bread, jams, chutney etc. I use HM cleaning products (thankyou Rhonda-Jean), cook everything from scratch, budget carefully, use up EVERYTHING in the kitchen, squash toilet rolls, squeeze toothpaste tubes, hang washing on the line (be gone, dratted tumble drier and a curse on your cycle......). Ummmmm, what else.
Oh, yes I am in luuuuuuurve with HFW (and Neil Oliver, the chap from 'Coast' - must be all that hair)

By the way - with donating your body - don't they give it back at some point? The other point is that there will be no funeral for family and friends to attend, which is an important part of the grieving process. Although i guess there could be a memorial, but is it the same?
They give you the family the ashes back at some point, if requested. There is a memorial provided at the university close to us, but if you wanted a funeral for family and friends there'd be nothing to stop you having a ceremony without the body, or if you wanted at a later point to bury the ashes.
For us, hopefully we'll last until old age, when we'll have outlived our family (we're not having kids) and we're a couple of atheists, so a funeral ceremony would likely be pretty moot.Softstuff- Officially better than 0070 -
Next Monday is D Day for my Big Test Results. To make the weekend go faster, DH is taking me out on a trip down memory lane tomorrow - a repeat of our first date over 25 years ago (lunch and a walk round a ruined castle) and all his own idea, who says romance is dead when you're past 50? :T . Don't know what we will do Sunday yet, but will think of something.
Welcome to all the new posters, this is a lovely thread with lovely people, you'll love it here :T
Have a lovely weekend and postive thoughts for your results on Monday:)Taking it one day at a time0 -
How about chowder with the chicken and some sweetcorn and potatoes?
I have a Good Housekeeping cookery book from 1975 and still use it constantly. A lot of the recipes are utterly classic and simple. But with others you find tastes change and more ingredients have become available. I was looking up chutney recipes in it recently in order to help get through the glut of cooking apples. All the recipes used malt vinegar and pickling spice, whereas a more modern book I have used exactly the same basic recipe but used cider vinegar and fresh ginger and other spicesIt doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!0
