I swear by Good Housekeeping's cookery book - when still at home I used to use my mum's 1950's edition so my parents gave me a copy when I got engaged in 1982, which my ex nabbed when we spilt up. I picked up another copy in a charity shop, which DS1 nabbed when he went to uni. I found ANOTHER copy in a charity shop which, yes, you've guessed it, DS2 acquired when he left home last month! I don't think I will bother with another one as it appears to encourage the menfolk leaving home and DH and I have only been married 13 months!!!
I think staying away from that book no matter how good it is probably a good idea :rotfl:
Finally everything I have been saying over the last year has sunk into OH head. The kids were needing some new clothes so II have been keeping an eye and just buying items when I can and they are cheap. OH came home yesterday with a T-shirt each for the younger ones reduced to75p each, nothing wrong with them and the kids loved them.
As for donating my body to medical science I really should I am the only one in my family that doesn't work in medicine in one way or another. My dad was a pharmacologist so I was brought up with rats brains and slices of human brains in my house that things like that just seemed normal.
Got a recipe for fish pie from a freind yesterday so am going to go and give it a go.Lose 20lb in 12 weeks 5/200 -
After a few days of not being able to do much (again ) I logged in and felt overwhelmed by the amount of postings to catch up on the old thread - only to find Haribo has started a new one, so I've decided to start afresh on here.
I'm sitting next to the open french doors and it's lovely. A bit chilly, but bright and clear. I am trying to decided what to cook for dinner that would win the challenge DH casually threw my way this morning:-
DH: The fridge looks empty, do you need me to go shopping on the way home?
Me: No thanks, I'm trying to clear out the freezer and cook from left overs.
DH: Does that mean pie??? (said with hopeful grin)
Me: No, you had pie on Tuesday. Anyway, fridge isn't empty there is one cooked chicken drumstick left over from last night.
DH: Well I wouldn't put it past you to make a meal for 3 out of that, and knowing you, the cat will probably get a mouthful too.
So what do you think ladies? so far I'm thinking along the lines of shredding the meat, removing a mouthful for Susie the cat and mixing the rest with sweetcorn to make fritters, but if any of you have a better idea I am all ears....we are sharing that chicken drumstick come hell or high water!!!!
Next Monday is D Day for my Big Test Results. To make the weekend go faster, DH is taking me out on a trip down memory lane tomorrow - a repeat of our first date over 25 years ago (lunch and a walk round a ruined castle) and all his own idea, who says romance is dead when you're past 50? :T . Don't know what we will do Sunday yet, but will think of something.
Welcome to all the new posters, this is a lovely thread with lovely people, you'll love it here :TPeople Say that life's the thing - but I prefer reading

when MIL died there was only OH and myself to do the arrangements. She was a member of a church, so the main funeral service was held there. We decorated the church with flowers and tealights, and laid out the church hall with tables with flowers and tealights as well. I did all the food for the wake. We provided the music for the church service (MIL loved opera so chose two of her favorite pieces, both of which were highly emotional anyway, still can't listen to them without blubbing!). We bought a wicker casket online, was cheaper and much nicer that the coffins on offer from the FD. We found lots of photos of MIL with her family and friends and pinned them up on a board, and I got lots of copies made for people to take (really cheaply done online, cost about £10). I get terribly emotional at funerals at the best of times, so having a lot of work to do kept me from being a sodden mess throughout.
We had not had a chance to talk to MIL about what she wanted (she had cancer, but died sooner than expected and tbh we all !!!!!footed around the subject, which, in hindsight was not such a good thing), but hopefully we were able to give her a send-off she would have approved of.Think big thoughts but relish small pleasures0 -
I think we should write down our wishes for our funerals especially when family are not quite as close with each other as they should be , I have worked in pubs for years and have had to organise quite a few wakes and see amount of times you had 2 sides a family wanting completely different thing, the FD and myself would end up mediators between the family members. My advice is to write exactly what you want and who you want to carry out your wishes.Lose 20lb in 12 weeks 5/200

I agree about the funerals. The night before a major op a couple of years ago, I sat up and wrote out all my funeral instructions, a letter to the vicar, instructions about my son - his routine etc. I like to think of it as organised, but hubby just said it was cos I was a control freak ............
Oh, and good luck with the results TaurusGBLive on £4000 a year again for 20110 -

Chicken & Sweetcorn soup?
I usually make a portion of Coronation Chicken (ish) with any scraps of chicken I have left - they can then stretch to fill jacket potatoes. With a salad, this can be quite a substantial meal.
Oh! And the cat can have the skin - and then go whistle.

the last two times I've bought a whole chicken, I've got it home to cook and it's been off, arrrgh! There's still been a few days left on the use by but the smell, yuck!
Good luck for your results Taurus, we're all rooting for you x0 -
Shelley - If you haven't tried already, give smelly chicken a wash before finally chucking it. Sometimes chook can get a bit sweaty in it's wrapper, and the smell is only superficial. A wash and if you are going to use it, a wipe over with a cut lemon does wonders!Think big thoughts but relish small pleasures0

I hope you took the chickens back - I have had this problem a few times - buy it, pop in the fridge (fridge is def cold enough) and a day or two later it stinks  I usually phone the store helpline (who then send vouchers) or take the chicken back if I am going past - I refuse to pay for food that goes off before its sell/use by date.0
