what is the general consensus then ?

I bought the Iphone 3Gs back in March 2010 and I still use it at the moment, the battery could be better but all in all it has been a good machine.
I dislike Itunes and the whole (sync) thing that Apple has going on locking phones down to PC's etc especially when I plug mine into about7 different ones.

I am considering Android next, I have had 3 windows based phones (HTC) and each was as bad as the last, unresponsive and poor - I know things have moved on but I have been put off - especially as my friends 2 month old HTC sits there rebooting itself every 45 minutes all day long.

Nokia N-95 was my last Nokia and it was a superb phone though Nokia seem to have dried up a little.

The Galaxy S2 tempts me though by March the S3 may be here - or I could maybe go for another Iphone (4S?) though it is unlikely due to the restrictiveness of the apple kit.

I wont be getting a blackberry as I am not a teenage girl or a businessman who needs email constantly at his fingertips.

I think Android is the way to go though I would like to know which one would be best to go for ?

If you need Android phone than go for:
Samsung Galaxy Nexus it is a direct google product and updates are easy to get compare to other other Android phones
Going to be released within few weeks.

You cant worry about next phone. Android & Windows phone are being released or updated every few months. Generally as soon as you get the phone something better is coming out. If you wait until March or April to get S3 by than S4 may be few months away. The new Widnows Phone is worth checking as well.

Go and have a look for yourself, play with the phones in a shop, choose a few handsets you like and then have a nosey online for user guides and see exactly what each handset can do and how things get done, then pick whichever suits you best :)
Now free from the incompetence of vodafail

Enjoy the handset you have now, although I now have a Ray, I still miss aspects of my Satio, great thing with handsets is there is a model and price to suit everyone :j

Nokia Lumia 800 - better camera, longer battery life, bigger display, lower price.

I should have mentioned the lance was in one hand and the camera in the other, there is plenty ofkick back from the lance , so difficult to do a BBC standard video under those circumstances, it would be nice though for folk to post up what there phones do ;)
