Cheap Butter?

    Anyone think they would use less butter if they went for catering packs with 7g individual portion size?

    There is no contest between butter and margarine. Butter is healthy, margarine is not. Butter is a natural product full of fat soluble vitamins (A,D,E,K). Saturated fat is actually benificial to health. It shouldn't be avoided like the plague! Butter does not contain any trans fat. Margarine on the other hand is made from rancid vegetable oils. They may be genetically modified and some contain toxic substances. In the past it was full of trans fat but recently these have been reduced or omitted to make it "healthier". Any vitamins are processed out. It might be fortified at the end but natural vitamins are always better than synthetic.

    Sorry I can't help with cheap butter. The cheapest I have found recently is £2.50 for 500g of Anchor.
  • Actually butter is made from double cream, cream prices have also increased significantly & to a lesser extent so have cheese prices.

    Cream comes from milk, and as I said milk prices have remained constant.

    So unless there is far less cream in milk these days I cannot see how they can justify the increases in butter prices.
  • Retail milk prices may not of changed much recently but the profit margins have dropped over the last year. Supermarkets use cheap milk to get people into their shops once they are in there the majority of people will buy the rest of their shopping there rather than going elsewhere. Once one supermarket lowers their milk prices the others follow suit to avoid losing customers.

    That point aside the relationship between the price of milk & other dairy products is more complicated because it depends on what the milk produced is allocated for use as. Over the last year the amount of milk allocated for use as butter, cream & yoghurt has dropped which has forced retail prices up & butter has had to be pulled out of the the private storage aid scheme to supplement what is available to purchase.

    This is nonsense! To say saturated fat is beneficial to health is rubbish - it increases the risk of heart disease and various cancers. Butter does contain trans fats (up to about 4%). Margarine type products on sale today (none of which are actually margarine!) are not made from partially hydrogenated vegetable oils and so have virtually no trans fats.

    Where is your evidence that margarine is made from rancid oils? Or that they may be genetically modified or contain toxic substances? This is just scare mongering.

    I couldn't afford butter these days, no way. You're right about the 'glory days' of 50p a pack last year - quite a few staples seem to be painfully expensive these days in comparison.

    I always use a spread of some sort, varies in type dependent on what I can get cheap - luckily I was raised on spreads not butters and always saw butter as a treat so I'm happy enough with spread.

    You might want to look up some of the studies carried out on coconut oil too if you still believe all saturated fat is bad for your health.

    More specifically butter contains a small percentage of naturally occuring trans fats, trans fats in margarine are synthetic. Natural & synthetic versions of similar substances can have very different effects on health.
  • I buy the Lurpak spreadable it's on offer in Asda at the min for 40p/100g (£2 a pack) but sometimes it's in Morrisons for 2 for £3.

    I know some people don't like the thought of the vegetable oil in the spreadable but i've been buying it for ages now it's really nice.
