Cheap Butter?

I have seen butter for £1.10 per block at tesco and asda but not any cheaper. Does anybody know if you buy it in bulk from a dairy cheaper? Has anybody seen any 250g blocks of butter cheaper recently. This time last year it was 50p in asda!:(

You have to move with the times, raw materials for butter have obviously increased which means price of butter goes up. There is a thread about making your own plus many threads about cost of butter.
  • A case of butter (40 blocks) from a dairy is currently around £60 which works out at about £1.50 per 250g block. Supermarkets get better deals because they have far more buying power as a result they can afford to sell butter cheaper than most companies can buy it.

People in the south of England can get a slightly better deal here:

Shorters Club sell butter in bulk in certain areas too.

I've started buying Stork etc for making cakes & biscuits etc, (low fat) marg for sandwiches and only use butter for bread and jackets. It means that the butter that I buy lasts for longer. Also buying a 500g block often works out cheaper....if you can resist the urge to use it twice as fast!

  • I see today in mySupermarket that "I can't believe it's not butter" 500g is £1.00 in ASDA. If you are willing to go for fake butter (healthier though) for 50p per 250g.

    All butter is is milk.

Milk prices have certainly not risen at the same rate as butter has.

    Something fishy is going on.

Actually butter is made from double cream, cream prices have also increased significantly & to a lesser extent so have cheese prices.

Isn't there still a lot of debate as to whether this is true?
I bought some of the stuff you suggested & couldn't bring myself to eat it, the smell was so artificial.
    Butter is a natural product.

I agree that it's not natural but it has less trans fats I'm pretty sure. I'm not an expert but I think it's similar to the regular Coke/Diet Coke argument. Diet Coke is less sugary and less fatty than regular coke but it also has some artificial chemicals that are worse for you than what's in regular coke. (I'm almost 100% positive about this, someone can correct me if I'm wrong...) Either way best thing is to be light on using butter anyway.

I think I can't believe it's not butter tastes just as good though...maybe I'm crazy though haha.

there also the staffing costs of the dairy which could have gone up, other overheads have gone up as well.

Unless you can find a local dairy and you can get on the good side of the owner then you might be in with a chance of getting some cheap but i cant see you getting it cheaper than the multiples but you never know.
