    I think it's 14+30=44 days in fact.

However, '3' CS are talking rubbish as usually.
Under DSR it is 7 days, not 14.
Even if it is 14 under '3' returns policy, it applies only to an unused sim, and the sim was bought from Tesco, not from '3'.

They did seem to know it was a SIM bought from Tesco.

Toward the end of the call they mentioned that cancelling via the 14 day cooling off period may still result in me being charged for a month's usage; precisely because I'd bought through Tesco.

My phone also arrived today after being told it would be later. So that's good.

Let me know how you get on cancelling. I've not activated my SIM yet so would be great to know the correct process, etc.

If you want to cancel without any charge at all, I'd phone them up from a different number and say the SIM pack is unopened & you've changed your mind. A normal cancellation within the cooling off period should be trouble free.

The complication in my case was the desire to have precisely 1 month's service (+/- 1 day).
I wonder if that means you are technically bound into 2 x months payments then? (£20)

Part months are charged by the day proportionally to the monthly tariff.

Presumably if you've changed your mind you will need to return the handset as well?

So to clarify, you have to activate the SIM, wait 14 days and then call to give 30 days notice. You will be charged approx £15 for 1.5 x months service?

3 have no idea you got the handset.
All they see is that you're a SIM only 1 month rolling contract that purchased through Tesco.

No, I got it resolved (eventually).
I've updated my initial post (that I posted while the call was in-progress) with the conclusion to the call. here.

To summarise; You can give your regular 30 days notice within the 14 day cooling off period - just don't expect the first CS agent you contact to handle it correctly (and probably not the 2nd, 3rd, or 4th!).
However eventually you'll get through to someone who will know what they're talking about, and will be able to fulfill your request.

    :edit:

    One addendum:

They started the contract on the day the SIM was delivered (yesterday) rather than the day the SIM was activated (today).
This seems a little naughty, as the SIM was delivered more than half-way through the day, so I will be charged for service that I couldn't possibly exploit.

Ah, so if I don't want the service, I can call and cancel within the cooling period (with 3) on the proviso that the SIM isnt opened yet? And a free handset? Fantastic!

What number did you call from a non-3 phone?

I called 333, but there is an 08xx alternative here.

Well that was easy. Under 1 minute on the phone after selecting the options to get through. Contract cancelled, DD cancelled, no charges made, letter being sent to confirm. Told to chuck away SIM.
