The rubbish lane discipline is what annoys me the most in this country - people just do not know how to drive or even the basic rules of the road. Germany was great, sit in the outside lane too long and you get an Audi or Merc up your backside flashing their lights. But generally nobody did this and everything, lorrys, cars and motorcycles, just flowed.

Indeed. If people want to do 45MPH through these roadworks then thats fine as long as they stick in L1 if they're not passing anyone and if they are, if they move over and get out the damned way when they have passed them.

I'm sure I read somewhere once that if everyone used the motorway lanes properly, the resulting reduction in congestion would be like building 800 miles of new motorway.

That is because your 50MPH is in reality 45MPH...

Lorry speedos by law are far more accurate than car ones and checked for calibration every 2 years. As a lorry driver it used to pee me off when you'd get some moron in a car in L2 doing 45MPH as I couldn't go into L3 to go past due to both width restriction and the law banning HGVs from the outside lane of a motorway 3 or more lanes wide.

Hmmm, and bloody lorry drivers who insist on overtaking another lorry on a dual carriageway and it takes them about 20 mins to do so slowing us car drivers down.

    The nerve.

If it says 50, I will drive at 50 on my speedo and them that dont like it can take a jump !

PS: the new average speed cameras on the M62 roadworks have fined 7340 of these "experts" in one week since they were turned on.

On the basis that most cars' speedos can be expected to over-read by around 5% and most camera partnerships don't prosecute until the ACPO guideline limit is reached, I'm happy to set my cruise control at 57 through a SPECS system.

    It hasn't failed yet.

    Huh?:(

All this to save a couple of mins whilst passing through average cameras?

And one could be prosecuted in any case for doing 57 in a 50 zone, just depends on the force, what camera recorded etc etc

    Good for you.

I do too and either give a smile or the finger if they don't like it.

Personally, I set my cruise control to 50, I wouldnt want to risk getting points for the sake of a few mph, however I would stay in the LH lane so if anyone wanted to go faster then they are free to. I suppose if I was regularly traveling through an average speed camera area I might drive differently, but wouldnt get annoyed at people going slower so long as it was in the left lane and not preventing others going faster.

This! 1000 times this! Thank you!

You drive in L1, the other are only for overtaking (queue situations nothwithstanding)

You can go as slow as you like in L1 (Subject to the minimum speed limit for motorways) and I don't care, but please stay there unless you are overtaking someone even slower.

FWIW, my technique is to calibrate my speedo, in my head, every week or so by driving at a constant speed on a long straight flat road and comparing it to the satnav. Currently, in the Mondeo, I need to do an indicated 57mph to actually be doing 50 and 80mph to actually be doing 70.

So I set my cruise control to 57 and 80 respectively in 50 and 70 limits.

    Perhaps I'm thick

My car isn't fitted with cruise control, but even if it was I doubt I'd use it much. For one thing it would use more fuel.

I don't think it's a good idea using cruise control in congested traffic. Indeed I've seen signs in places on some motorways abroad asking people to switch it off. Surely driving according to the conditions is what should be aimed at, not a constant speed?

Why do some people assume a Sat Nav is 100% accurate? "Take the 3rd Turning" for example, always 100% right? no, so Speed cant always be 100% right, correct?

The measurement of speed has nothing to do with the mapping. Providing you have a strong GPS signal that is.

    !!!!!!. :mad::mad::mad:

This is a perfect example of someone who was badly educated and with low interlect.
Even when using a three letter abbreviation one of them has to be a swear word.
People use a swear word because they can`t think of another word to use because of poor English education.

All is not loss though, because you can enrol in an English night school class.
After a few months, probably a lot longer in your case, you will be able to return to these forums and contribute something positive and generally add interest to the debate.
