I would guess that the ones doing over 50 are assuming 50 plus 10% plus 2 making 57mph as their limit.

If your speedo says 50 it`s know use guessing it`s so much under then speeding up.

In the USA they have good roads with a speed limit in most states of 55mph.
In this country we have crap, crowded roads and the government thinks it`s a good idea to raise the limit to 80mph.
A cut to 60mph would make more sense.

  • Im all for a rise in speed limits, but this should be along with a more strict crack-down to poor driving rather than speeders. People tailgaiting, not indicating, undertaking, sitting in the outside lane, no lights in poor visibility etc should be stopped and fined and have their licence removed for repeat offending. This is what causes the most accidents, greater speed makes them worse and harder to avoid, but if people drove correctly then the accident wouldnt happen in the first place.

You're long out of date, I'm afraid. Interstate speed limits are usually around 65 - 70, though they do sometimes drop to 55 around the outskirts of town.
I used to think that good grammar is important, but now I know that good wine is importanter.

Congratulations, that is a lot of rubbish to get in so few words.

Our motorways are generally in very good condition (either that or there are roadworks preventing you on goingfast anyway), it is our minor roads that are in dire need of cash, nobody is talking about raising the speed on these.

Many people drive at 80 anyway, in many countries (including where I lived for the last couple of years) this is the norm or even only an advisory (i.e. no limit), and the UK police often won't stop you unless your driving is also unsafe.

What makes roads unsafe are people that do not drive to the conditions, old cars that speed but simply do not have the handling capability of todays modern vehicles, people who neglect their cars (such as letting your tyres tread get low - just because it is the legal limit doesn't mean it is still works like new), old drivers, young drivers, morons, etc etc etc...

I drive to and from London from Derbyshire every month and it's a common occurrence that I get tailgated, flashed and hooted at for doing 50mph in the average speed limit areas! Lorries are the worse culprits!

That is because your 50MPH is in reality 45MPH...

Lorry speedos by law are far more accurate than car ones and checked for calibration every 2 years. As a lorry driver it used to pee me off when you'd get some moron in a car in L2 doing 45MPH as I couldn't go into L3 to go past due to both width restriction and the law banning HGVs from the outside lane of a motorway 3 or more lanes wide.

I've just hurt my back and suddenly found I had trouble with changing the gears (hurting my back). I was only in a 30 zone, but had to go 20-25 iles an hour to be on the safe side, for about 3 minutes till I could get home.

So you're openly admitting driving whilst unfit to drive? Thanks...

The rubbish lane discipline is what annoys me the most in this country - people just do not know how to drive or even the basic rules of the road. Germany was great, sit in the outside lane too long and you get an Audi or Merc up your backside flashing their lights. But generally nobody did this and everything, lorrys, cars and motorcycles, just flowed.

I must admit that I don't fully understand how they work, so if it is a 50mph limit I just try and stick to a steady 50mph. In the left hand lane, of course.
