Well done on your first sale wombat678 - heres to lots more to come

Wondered if anyone has experience of trying to get rid of smoke smells from books? Have tried some of the methods at the beginning of the thread - so far I've put them in fragranced [unused!!!] nappy sacks and sprayed Oust while fanning the pages but very little difference. Just wondering if its going to take a while - anyone else done this or other tried tested [and cheap] methods?

My OH told someone at work that I'd sell their unwanted books!!! This person is a heavy smoker and the books reek  I'm happy to sell them as I think they'll go ok and we'll share the profit if any - they are a mix of OU books and other academic tomes but am a bit concenrd re smell. Don't want to get neg feedback as so far its 100%.

Any advice would be much appreciated

  • Well done wombat, you're up and running now :T - you'll look back and remember the day you made your first sale, I think that most of us do...

Hi there rare_stuff, :hello:it sounds like you are an Amazon pro, we've found that our in-house Amazon pros give us advice and tips that maybe we wouldn't have come up with ourselves, and as always on this thread the more input there is the better we all function as efficient sellers so please come back again soon and pitch in.
As Soo says if you can point out any glaring errors we can put them right but I think that most of the points you mention are in the first 2 posts already - these 2 posts are quite long and it's a bit of a challenge to read every word but by and large they set newbies off on the right course and when they've got to grips with it they then join the thread for more detailed help
  • Hi- I got a book today in a charity shop for 75p which on closer inspection turns out to be an American book. It isn't on the Amazon.co website but is on the .com one at $7. Is there a way of selling it on .co? Or of getting onto .com- I see one of the sellers is in the Uk and I wonder if people over here might like it - its an easy guide to John Maynard keynes
    What do you think?
Hi there - if you have a look at posts 297 and 298 this might be the answer that you need

Could I also refer back to the original advice given at the start of this thread in relation to pricing. It is advised to price match, rather than undercut. What is not mentioned is that many professional sellers use pricing software to ensure their copy is the cheapest available, so by undercutting you may only gain a price advantage for a few hours.

    Hi rare_stuff.

It's nice to have another experienced Amazon seller on board to offer a new perspective. :)

Your point about not undercutting because of the automatic pricing software, is one of the reasons why people are advised *not* to undercut, as this just leads to a rapid decline in a book's value and profit potential. :o

Also, people are advised not just to match the lowest price but to carefully consider the postage costs before listing to make sure that they aren't going to end up making a loss! I think most of us have learned that lesson the hard way though! ;)

    hello everybody......

sorry I have not been on recently,I've been very busy.....

To update you all on my recent finds, well not alot happened.

The Winnie the Pooh I listed on Ebay at £495.00,but not so much as an offer....so when the listing ended,I took the bull by the horns and relisted it on a normal auction starting at 1p ! Well it finishes tomorrow and it's up to £50.00 at the mo,lots of watchers,so we'll see what happens.

My 1596 bible finishes tomorrow too, again I listed it very highly priced, and again not a sausage.....I relisted it on a normal auction, started it at 1p,at the present time it's at £220.00-but it has till tomorrow,so it may or may not improve in price-again we'll have to wait and see...(over 30 watchers)

There is a good edition of :
SHIRLEY JACKSON~ Ist UK ed -THE HAUNTING of HILL HOUSE.

This is currently at £20.22,so again it will be interesting to see the final price.
I still have other books to list out of my lucky box I found,it's just getting round to it !

    Kind regard bukup

  • When you want to reactivate your listings go to the same place and there will be a reactivate link to click, Viking usually deliver the next day so if you ordered on friday they'll be with you on monday, if you ordered today it will be tuesday and the listings can take up to 2 days to get started again so you'll need to reactivate them again in plenty of time
If I screw my eyes up tight I can just about see where you're coming from
  • I did not mean to insult or offend any in my earlier post, and the relevent post I made on amazon at stupid o'clock in the morning.

I'm glad to see that I have not been 'flamed' by response reacting against what I did say. Please accept my apologies if anyone was insulted or offended by either of my posts.

On reflection I think the point that the advice given here is purely for the 'hobby' seller and is relatively good in that respect and it does distill much of the garbage of the seller help pages into one place. Though I do believe a better level of advice and more rounded advice from a community of experienced sellers on the amazon board may be superior, though on occassion you may need quite a thick skin to take part in some of the rough and tumble, but generally new posters with questions are greeted warmly and with respect, though the more stupid the question, the probability of being ridiculed may increase.

Well done, Wombat. :T This is where the addiction starts!

I've also read that you've placed an order for envelopes from Viking. All the signs of a full-blown addiction are there already! ;)
