Used car of non satisfactory quality + faults

Have you tried a local reputable garage to see if they can adjust the door so that it fits better. The photos of the 2 sides of the car seems to be taken from slightly different angles so its difficult to tell but it only looks very slightly out of alignment (not 2cm!)
If you could confirm the make and model then someone might be able to confirm how easy it is to adjust them0 -

I didn't say 2 cms at the beginning. said few cms ... but yeah perhaps it' about 1 cm. I will try and take a pic with something to compare the gap and make it clear. I took it to a local garage but they did the check only to write a report to the dealer. I'll let the dealer deal with the invoices etc if they accept to repair.
it's a renault clio (thank you for making clear the reasons why).
Although the alignment could be fixed there's the crack to fix (finally I can post a pic of this too!)0 -
I dont think Ranger was trying to be harsh- used cars will invariably have faults, and everything you have described is what I'd consider minor.... and I've bought plenty of used cars in my time. It is a very valid point- if you're unsure what you're buying, bring a car-savvy person with you. Neighbour, mech, work colleague- doesn't matter. Some of the cars I've bougt have been drivable, some have required a hell of a lot of work- but it's completely dependant on the price, condition, use I want from the car, how easily I can fix it..... I've usually bought on the condition of sold as seen.
Yup, door is probably the most aggravating, but until it's seen, it's hard to say how easily fixed- wouldn't guess overly hard though. The crack- wouldn't be able to tell without physically seeing, sorry, but local scrappy's are a good bet for a cheap door.
People are asking the make and model as the more info they know of a car, the easier they'll be able to help you sort it.
Unfortunately, with 2nd handers, you do need to go over with a fine toothcomb....0 -

I'm sorry if I sounded bitter at times but wasn't meant to be like that (at least with those willing to be constructive and help!)
I agree with all the points and the bitter parts too. I'll let everything in the hands of the dealer and his will to respect the SOGA.
As for the "sold as seen", I am sure you know, but it's against the SOGA. you could report a seller if they write such a thing.
I'll let you all know what the reply of the seller is when he'll get back to me (if).
Thank you,

Ask a local garage to give it the once over, they'll check stuff like if the chasis is bent (eg, been in accident which could explain the door), and anything causing it be unsafe to be on the road. Take this list to the dealer and tell them you want them to put these right, whether its a £500 car or a £50000 car it needs to be sold in a road safe state by law. Next time you buy a car for near £3k, perhaps get a proper mechanics report if you don't have a friend who knows his beans0

I am happy to provide a social service with this post: seems like most of you is taking the chance to take out their chest their frustrations. The question now is: shall I charge?0 -
OP the king pin is bent, this is where your door problem is (the copper pin running through the door hindge) look at the top and the look at the bottom you see the head of the (the larger part of the pin in the bottom of the pic)pin is going in towards the frame when it should be straight. if the upper and lower pins are like this it will adjust the door out by a few MM. to me in the pic the pillar has been repainted as its a matt in colour and should be shiny like your door, same with the inner arch. should be shiny not dull matt looking.0

yeah, either re-painted or taken from another similar model (if that is possible).
As you suggested (and really likely) it might have been badly damaged and fixed cheaply somewhere.0 -

Sorry- my bad- most of my cars have been bought privately, it's pretty much buyer beware.... Should have said that...
Unfortunately the couple of dealings I've had with dealerships- one very good, one very bad, saleswise.... Dealers can be very crafty to talk to, and I've never needed the extras they offer- and I love haggling, so private suits me fine! :rotfl:
Let us know how it goes, though, will be interested.0
