Please help I think I may be in huge trouble re continuous insurance

I was given a new car in May this year and haven't done anything about disposing of my previous old banger which is sitting outside my house. I had no idea about the new continuous insurance law until I was reading something about it the other day. I haven't received any warnings from DVLA but I'm now totally panicking because I can't find the vehicle's log book and I have a horrible feeling that I didn't inform them when I moved house.
I'm terrified. What should I do?

Did you declare your old car SORN? If so, you have no need to worry.
If not, and you can't find the V5, then write to the DVLA, Swansea, immediately with reg no, registered address, etc, telling them that the car is off road, and importantly, sign the letter.
I don't think the DVLA are going to take action from the first day of the new law. They will need to give the new law time to get into action."There are not enough superlatives in the English language to describe a 'Princess Coronation' locomotive in full cry. We shall never see their like again". O S Nock0 -
I didn't declare it SORN as I don't have anywhere to keep it off road, it was taxed and I was fully intending to quickly dispose of it (which obviously hasn't) and I wasn't aware of the insurance thing.0

I may be wrong, but I thought that if the car was parked up on a road then even if it wasn't being used then it required insurance.0 -

If it's parked on the road then it can't be declared SORN and must be insured.
OP: Don't panic! Find the V5 and check your tax and insurance documents for it. You may find that your current insurers have automatically renewed your insurance for it (at an inflated premium).
If you find the V5 quickly you can decide how to dispose of the car ,whether that's scrapping it ASAP or ebaying it, or if it's worth more tarting it up properly for an autotrader sale.0 -
Has the tax expired? When did it expire?0

OP, your problem is nothing to do with the new continuous insurance thing.
It has always been a requirement that if a vehicle is kept on a public road, then it must be taxed and insured.0 -

Not quite true, the continuous insurance thing might end up costing the OP £100 automatic fine on top of whatever else awaits her.
But we need all the dates and facts before we know where she stands.
& OP, if your car is untaxed get it off the road ASAP.0 -
Tax has just run out on Friday.0
