    Hi ,

Thanks but i mean mobile broadband with the dongle , would i still need a MAC code for this or a PAC? Would i still have to pay the remaining of the contract??? I only want to switch as there speeds and service is rubbish.

    Thanks

No, the dongle is still a mobile, a MAC is only for fixed land line ADSL connections, you are still liable for any contract term still outstanding if you were to cancel your contract early.

  • I am with madasafish broadband and i have 3 months left on my 4th contract with them. Lately the connection they have been supplying has been horrible at some points my speeds have been as low as 1mb on a usual 6mb connection and my ping has been 390ms at times. I have requested a MAC code and they are trying to charge me for the remainder of my contract, or are they trying to charge me for the MAC code. Does this break OFCOMS rules.

    3 months cost for me is= £45
They are trying to charge me £120
Why is this, i have had nothing but problems and i just want to leave.
  • Hi,

Im trying to switch providers from Plusnet to Sky.

I have been given my MAC code by plusnet; but Sky can not use this to move me - it gives the same error every time we try: The MAC you provided is not valid for the telephone number supplied.

No one at Sky (even the technical bods) can sort it and believe it is the wrong code; i have spoke to Plusnet a number of times regarding this and they are adamant it is the right code. I have threatened going to Ofcom etc, i was wondering if anyone else has had this problem or got any advice?
  • Newnet's policy on migration is confusing, and it looks like it is still charging:
"Process for migrations away and cessation.
The following process is for migrations away and cessation of broadband. Please bear in mind that each case is individual.
    1. Customer chooses to terminate their service or request MAC code.
    2. If the customer selects 'migrate' then they will be emailed a MAC code which will normally arrive in their inbox within 10 minutes.
    3. The customer is then asked to settle their account. We assume a 30 day notice period and calculate monies due.
    4. We look for any excess bandwidth and calculate money due and raise an invoice.
    5. We look for any unpaid invoices and calculate any credit due and apply to the unpaid invoice.
    6. If the customer pays by Direct Debit and we have requested money from the bank (up to 10 working days prior to the due date) then we will credit the money to any excess b/w invoice.
    7. We check to see if they are within 12 months service and if so apply any additional charges due, eg £10 migration fee or any difference between full set up charge and our reduced charges.
    8. We check if the service is or has been Home LITE 12 with a minimum 12 month term and calculate money due for remainder of the term.
    9. If the customer has requested 'termination', then a BT imposed termination charge, currently £15.75 ex-VAT (£18.11 inc VAT) will be applied to the account.
    10. If our system cannot complete the settlement of account calculations for any reason then the customer will be asked to contact NewNet directly"
A friend of mine wants to migrate from Newnet to Talk Talk and is on a 12 month contract with Newnet which is ending soon. I am wondering which is the cheapest way to move over without extra charges. Talk talk say they don't accept a MAC code because it is moving from a non LLU line to a LLU one. So if she lets her 12 month newnet cease should they be charging £18.11 termination?
  • Hi Martin
I have a very big money saving tip for you everyone.
DO'NT BUY BROADBAND FROM VIRGIN MEDIA thet rip off a lot of custemers.
I for one am being ripped off by (sir !!!!!! branson)virgin media. I'm paying £57 a month for the XL package the Tv and phone are fine but the broadband is so slow it would be quicker to send my emails by racing snail. I have done a number of speed test my down load speed is 640 kbps and up load is 444 kbps most of the time. The broadband speed I pay for is 20 meg
I have contacted (sir !!!!!!'s) team and though to the slumdog millionaire in India and all they do is cut you off or fob you off.Do'nt buy VIRGIN BROADBAND and save yourself a shed load of money and time

Aol were not the easiest to deal with either.

At first they said it would take a few days and they would email back with the MAC CODE by a certain day (this was in 2007), we heard nothing so gave them a ring, they they gave it out on the phone just like that, which turned out to be the wrong one, we let them know and was told we had to wait a few days........AGAIN !!!

We did not bother in the end and still stuck with them now.......
Did not hear from them though......

  • I'm very new to all this so sorry if i make a mess of it. I've just got off the phone (after over an hour) from my ISP trying to get my MAC and they say I cannot have it without cancelling the contract and paying up in full, they will not send me a copy of the contract that they say I have with them, just keep referring me to an e-mail from last year that I cannot find anywhere. Any advice?, I don't want to be without broadband (they said if I ask for the MAC they have the right to cancel my contract anyway?!)
    Thanks

  • i phoned tiscali and told them i wanted to cancel broadband with them and i wanted a mac number, which i got from tiscali on the 11th december and recived it by text and letter within a couple of days, i was told to get what ever emails i needed in the account because once i was tranfered over to postoffice they would be gone and account closed, not to cancel direct debit so they could take the money upto the date of transfer of sevice.
the letter i recived gave the mac number and said to use it by 30days or i would still be with tiscali and have to ask for a new mac number.
now i notice that tiscali have took money for broadband up to end of Jan, i switched over on the 4th Jan, i rang tiscali and they said the mac number never got used so i am still with them for broadband and the post office never told them they are now my broadband provider. and i should of cancell again once post office took over, i explained i was never told that, just when the mac number is used by postoffice it cancel's broadband from tiscali ' and it also says in letter i got from tiscali'. post office said they use the mac number and tiscali know they 'postoffice' is the new provider.

I'm another BT customer of long standing who has been given the "our system cannot generate a MAC code for you and you will be emailed it within five working days" line.

Five working days is next Wednesday and I'll be giving them GBH of the earhole if I haven't received it by then.

  • Fed up with slow speeds and no investment at the exchange we decided to leave BT and ask for a MAC code. We got the MAC code from BT very quickly but have been told we will be charged £25 for leaving as Virgin don't use MAC codes.

I've told them i'm not paying it as it surely is a restriction on who can move to without penalties - so no penalties if I move to anyone else except a cable provider.

Surely this cannot be legal or fair?

Anybody had similar issues and is there a practical way to get around it rather than getting very fed up and annoyed?

    Thanks
