washing up liquid, toilet paper and a very big confusion!

Options
Hello everyone,

I am new to this part of the forum, not sure if I am in the right place so please let me know if i am not.

Well I am trying to save the pennies where possible as I am entering into a DMP to clear the debts and make the most of the pennies where I can.

I spend a huge amount on washing up liquid as I feel I have to have antibacterial but do I really need it.... I mean back in the day we never had it? Value is so cheap, does it do the same?

Also toilet paper, I spend a huge amount again on toilet paper, i have the value toilet paper but it just seems to be getting less for more money! How do I save on toilet paper?

Also is there any cleaning products that I could replace with good old fashioned homemade cleaning products and air freshners? Kim and Aggi dont really seem to use loads of products just all natural things?

Any suggestions would be really appreciated!!! Thank you xxxx

Didn't want to just read and run.

Washing up liquid is one thing I never scrimp on, I have tried the value ones and they seem to go far too quickly in my house and they are no way near as good as Fairy.

Toilet roll, I use the value rolls too, only from S@insburys though, I have a 5 yr old that goes through lots, so I now squeeze the roll so that the sheets break off, so its less waste.

Cleaning products...I just use Mr T's own antibacterial surface cleaner, bleach for my toilet and kitchen floor and Washing up liquid & water for my windows/mirrors

Do you have a Home Bargains near you? They sell a brand of toilet paper caleed Nicki, at £3.99 fo 18 rolls, which is a decent thickness and full sized rolls. Very good value indeed. I have also seen it on sale at market stalls and discount shops.
I still buy Fairy washing-up liquid; after trying the cheaper ones I find that it is still the best value because I use a lot less ( I empty it into a pump-dispenser so can regulate how much I use each time.)
Look at the Stardrops thread for cleaning uses. This can also be bought at Home Bargains. I use the white one (with amonia) for the kitchen and the yellow one for the rest of the house.

I'm very anti anti-bacterial. I think it does more harm than good. I do use Fairy and buy up when on special offer.

Toilet rolls - check out www.mysupermarket.co.uk for offers in the big supermarkets then bulk buy! Co Op usually has lots of toilet roll offers on (not available to check on this site).

No, you don't need antibacterial washing up liquid, but like mummy2jack I always stick to fairy as I've tried others and they just aren't economical because they are less effective and I need to use more to do the job.

For toilet rolls, these threads may help although be aware that some of the ideas are a bit extreme :

    Toilet Roll

toilet rolls ? best way of saving

    any alternative to loo roll...................

    that whole loo roll thing

This thread should help with alternative cleaning products:

I will squeeze my rolls from now on!! Its me that uses loads :o

Ive been using wipes (how bad am I) I really need to knock these on the head, I am going to buy a mop and bucket which OH will not be happy about as he likes wipes. xxx

Could you cut downt he amount of washing up liquid you use each time? ie, use a washing up bowl with a few inches deep of extremely hot water with a dash of washing up liquid. The heat will help to kill germs and you don't need to submerge everything completely. I know this might seem obvious if you do it anyway but i've seen so many people squirt washing up liquid on each plate and wash under a running tap  Rinse- yes, wash like that noooo!

Make reusable loo roll for no.1s? Once you're on value bog roll there's not much more you can do, but I do think reusable loo roll could be a good er "investment" :)

One has just opened up in town actually, lovely thank you so much, I havent been in there yet. I have got to go to town today so I will go have a look. I think I may switch to Fairy, I think they sell it in the pound shop. And a pump dispenser, i like the sound of that, I have got a fairly big one about to finish from my hand soap so I will use that once its done.

Thank you for the tip I will go have a look. xx
