I went on a food hygiene course many years ago, and the man running it said that there was a huge outbreak of salmonella that killed a lot of people in Scotland, which he said was caused by the caterers using antibacterial washing up liquid to clean the kitchen surfaces and nothing else. I think the powers of a lot of antibacterial products are overrated and a lot of products aren't used correctly, which renders them useless anyway.
We were told that all we need is washing up liquid and an antibacterial spray - for work surfaces he suggested we clean them with washing up liquid and water, and then after it was rinsed, spray on antibac stuff and wipe with a clean slightly damp cloth and leave it to dry.
He said bleach wasn't good for kitchen work surfaces and most sinks as it sort of eats them. (My mum can testify to that one, her sink needs replacing and she's a bleach freak.)
I must confess I do as he told us, though I don't like the fact I'm leaving a chemical product on work surfaces and then preparing food on the surfaces (after it's dried), I have this vision of all the chemicals going into the food and making us radioactive. But I am funny about the kitchen - we have dogs, chickens, kids who attract muck, and so it's sort of damage limitation really. I guess we get enough dirt from other sources to give us our necessary lifetime's peck of muck!
I also agree that Stardrops is MAGIC! I love it. My mum laughed her head off when I told her about my obsession. She said she hasn't seen it for years! But she says it always made her hands sore, whereas it never does mine. In fact, I stand in bath in my bare feet to clean the bathroom and end up covered in the stuff when I'm rinsing the tiles down. My feet have never been shinier!0 -
ps no answer on the loo roll. I think we have a monster eating ours as well. I'd be happy at using three a week, we get through probably 4 or 5!!!0

Well what can I say, I think I am never going back to antibacterial washing up liquid again and going to save loads! I know what you mean about preparing food and the chemicals, I actually use a large plate to chop everything on instead of a chopping board. it sort of contains everything, is easy to tip all the food into bowl/pan and it gets washed up the same way. A bit of dirt doesnt hurt anyone!
I need to get some of this Stardrops. Are they environmentally friendly? Better than other household cleaners? I need to do something with my floors as I spend a fortune in wipes! Can you use stardrops on lino flooring? Thats great about your feet!

Take some tips from here, I have just squeezed the loo roll and it makes it harder for the paper to come off! Re washing up liqid - if you have an Aldi near by do give their liquid a try - OH does the wash up here and used to go through Fairy at a rate of knots (despite constant telling that he did not need to use so much!) but we have switched to the Aldi stuff and the last bottle lasted weeks and weeks. OH was not a fan of own brand liquid, had pooh-poohed Mr T & Mr S brands but loves the Aldi version!Think big thoughts but relish small pleasures0
