II don't like the fact I'm leaving a chemical product on work surfaces and then preparing food on the surfaces (after it's dried), I have this vision of all the chemicals going into the food and making us radioactive.

Don't prepare food on the worksurface then. Use a big chopping board or six then wash them well in hot water and fairy liquid, or bung them in the dish washer. You can get different coloured ones for meat, veg, bread etc but I must admit I don't bother, I use wooden ones for everything as wood has been proven to be better at not harbouring germs than scratched up plastic boards. (Just make sure the minute you've cut up meat or chicken on a board it goes straight into the washing up pile, together with the knife and wash your hands.) And yes, I wash my wooden boards in the dishwasher too. They last three or four years before they split and they're not expensive to start with.

Apart from anything else if you chop stuff up on your kitchen worksurface you'll scratch it and the germs will go and lurk in there and no amount of anti bacterial will help that. And it wrecks your worksurfaces eventually.

I'm very sorry I just read OP nd haven't red other replies, so I apologise if I'm repeating someone, but I was told recently Aldo had amazing washing up loquid that topped a Which? test and was the cheapest they tested.

I use morning fresh washing up liquid when I can get it on offer, not quite as strong as fairy but pretty good. Ususally find it in home bargains or poundstretcher.

I use morning fresh as well or ecover. Again bought when on offer. For loo rolls we use Comfy Soft from HB at £3.59 for 18 when they have them in. Although they were £2.99 not so long ago.

I think the Aldi liquid came out top in a recent Which review too!

Enjoy your trip to HB:) I'm sure you'll have realised from various posts on MSE but if you see something you want in HB and have the money BUY IT as it may well not be available next time you go in.
  • loo rolls - love the nikki ones wwith aloe vera which I get from a cheapo shop
also lidl do a 3 ply one which is wonderfull
I never use the antibac stuff - s speck of dirt a day and all that
and as for those dettol pump things - what a joke, how on earth have we survived all these years without them?
good old soap and water and a bit of bleach/vim/ajax/whatever was all my mum had and we never had the "bugs" that seem to go around these days.

    Hiya,

The wipes arn't needed either. You can use cloths of your choice then just throw in the washing machine with your other washing. As you say, if you can re-use nappies then you can re-use cleaning cloths.

    Best of luck :)

If you really like wipes then they're reusable, I chuck baby wipes into the washing machine and use them over and over again. I don't have a baby any more though, I tend to use them for face and fingers and makeup and they wash really well. On the whole I imagine the floor and furniture wipes are pretty fiddly, nothing beats a nice big floor cloth and down on your hands and knees to wash the floor.

Instead of wipes, for our general cleaning/ disinfecting - floors & surfaces, we use pet virkon as we have a house rabbit and I don't like the thought of very strong bleaches etc being left behind.

It comes as a powder and you can make it up in a bucket, or your own spray bottle. We make a batch in a spray bottle then use general cleaning or microfibre clothes to use on the counters / floor /rabbit cage.. everywhere really. It is a bit expensive to buy at first, but it is very economical - the powder keeps a long time and you just make it up as you need it. This is what vets etc use.

The water with the powder in it is bright pink - it looses the colour after a couple of weeks and then you need to make up fresh for a spray bottle.

I have a stack of clothes, different ones for each area of house/ purpose and put them in a hot wash with the towels etc. It is quicker for me to do a floor with cloth and spray bottle than with a mop and bucket.

Morning Fresh washing up liquid as I find the Persil nozzle clogs up. Morning fresh is nearly always 50% extra free. Iceland toilet roll 4 for a pound and they are thick and luxurious. :)
  • Tesco washing up liquid works for me and is half the price of Fairy. Which magazine has saved me a fortune over the years because they do a test on say washing machines and then recommend the best ones. That helps you to buy the reliable makes. Squash the loo rolls but always buy them on offer.
