washing up liquid, toilet paper and a very big confusion!

  • Tesco washing up liquid works for me and is half the price of Fairy. Which magazine has saved me a fortune over the years because they do a test on say washing machines and then recommend the best ones. That helps you to buy the reliable makes. Squash the loo rolls but always buy them on offer.

I use Tesco's own brand washing up liquid too. I suffer from dermatitis on my hands and I can't use Fairy at all. I find the own brand concentrated washing up liquid is fine and last me ages.

Re anti bacterial anything. If you use these antibacterial products they kill off the weak bacteria and leave the stronger bacteria to multiply. I think if you have sick people in the house then regular use of an anti bacterial spray on door handles etc are good.

If everyone is general healthy your body will be able to fight off any bad bacteria.

Same goes for antibiotics, the reason why doctors don't like to issue them anymore is because they kill all the weaker bugs leaving the stronger bugs to stay in your body and multiply and then be transferred to other people.

I started to save lots of washing up liquid by not leaving the pots and pans to soak for a day and then having to refill the bowl again using more liquid. Too lazy to do it there and then.

  • Wow thank you all so much for your wonderful replies and all your help! This is great! Welcome newbies and thank you all for joining me.

I went to home bargs yest - what an amazing shop! I had a good look round, def get the toilet rolls from there!

I am going to have a look in aldi at some point this week!

I need to confess something though and this may sound really bad, I wash my hands alot! I am trying to scrimp on gas too, really am! So I think by using anti bac handwash that not putting hot water on is ok! Seriously I know you are probably all thinking  but I am now taking this all to the next level!

    I found 6 kitchen rolls in 99p shop! :j

I got a mop and bucket for 99p each

I squeezed the toilet roll together, was working until OH un-squeezed it!

The anti bac wipes will be a thing of the past - OH is not happy about it but do I care - no!

I am so grateful for all your help you have given me! I truly am!

I bought some cloths aswell dish cloths which i will put in the washing machine, and I found some old linen napkins/table cloth which are stained so I am going to use them also as part of my 'saving on kitchen roll'.

My DD gets alot of stains in her clothes and well I seem to get through so much stain remover its unreal. Everything is coming to me, that I am remembering I get through.

    thank you xxx

  • I use soda crystals in my wash, it works as a great water softner, so you only need to use half the recommended dose of washing powder/liquid.

Soda Crystals are also great for stain removing and acting as an excellent pre-soak, keeping your drains clear, cleaning your dishwasher, cleaning your washing machine and lots of other general household uses. It's very cheap too at around £1 a kilo (you only need 25g for most applications).

Washing up liquid I normally use Fairy. I stock up when its on offer. A couple of months ago there was a BOGOF in Tesco so I got 20 bottles. (that should keep me going for a while)

As for toilet roll I have tried cheap brands. I used to use one from Lidl. What I have found though is that you end up using more and it costs you more in the long term. I'm a bit tragic and did a couple of weeks with the Lidl one and a couple woth Andrex. due to the amounts used Andrex came out cheaper suprisingly. Now I stock up when Andrex or Tesco own brand (which I find pretty good also) is on offer.

As always buy in bulk when on offer and that will save you in the long term.

Totally agree on the Soda crystals I use them on everything. From soaking greasy pans to drains and putting in my wash to reduce tha amount of washing powder needed.

  • +1 on use of fairy and minimal use of antibacterial.

Don't use air fresheners - look at the list of ingredients. I open the window. Even if it's cold, open it up and let a bit of air through the whole house and then close it up. If you want nice smells - bake something! Baking soda absorbs smells - but not generally required here.

Another vote for fairy liquid here. But I only buy it on offer-usually a few good offers on items from now and in the run up to christmas and stuff like this gets bought and stacked on shelvesin the garage (kids nickname the garage mums shop lol). Currently my shop looks pretty empty and I a also running down the food in the freezers (apart from harvested veggies/foraged stuff).
This time of year October onwards the big 4 start all their offers in the run up to christmas.
I like the Morrisons thing they did the last few years where you save up the reciepts (min spend each week £40) and if you have the right number of reciepts you get a voucher to use against you crimbo shop-we have saving stamps with them as well so usually end up wt a shop the week before christmas that doesn't involve any money coming out of the account that week lol. Works for us.
With the weekly spend thing we really stock up on offers-tinned/packet/cleaning stuff etc anything not perishable or freezable can keep for months-kids just recently finished the last of the 3 for 1 pringles and they tasted perfect.

My fall back if the fairy is not on offer and i run out is the Aldi magnum it is good and the closest thing to fairy I have ever found, if I had to give up fairy I wuld go to magnum.

    'saving on kitchen roll'.

theres never any hot water in my house, we have oil instea dof gas so i'd have to put my water heater on and it would eat the elc also it takes time 2 warm up, theres only hot water when were getting baths (usually have a shower) and if i'm cleaning the floors and bathroom, i boil the kettle for everything else, and we use tesco value baby bath in our soap dispensers and were all fine :)

Lost and nervous please don't get mixed up between caustic soda and soda crystals. I won't have caustic soda in the house it burns so bad, and is not the same as soda crystals. The soda crystals i buy come in a green bag and i use them for alsorts, washing machine, dishwasher if i run out of tablets, floors, stain removing. Apologies if you already knew the difference, just wanted to be better safe than sorry.
