Congrats on your open fire Frugal, there is nothing like it! Enjoy!

Just thought - have you got a toasting fork? Or you can improvise with a wire coathanger. I can't think of anything cosier than toasting bread (or maybe marshamallows) by the fire.

Edit: I think you got it just in time - the forecast said it is about to turn cold (and I heard mention of snow on Scottish hills!).

Thank you, I will. Good idea, I have fondue forks which will be good for the kids to do marshmallows - We don't really eat bread often but I will show the girls how to do baked potatoes in the fire at some point :D Perfect power cut food :T
  • What everyone else said, yankee candles are fabulous, we use them a vast amount as we have various animals, but it's always lovely when people expect the house to have a smell and comment that it doesn't.

Some of the festive fragrances are gorgeous.

Mmmm, baked spuds! I did some on the fire once just to experiment. Wrapped them in foil and then put them on a foil tray from a shop-bought (how very un-OS!:D) quiche perched on the edge. They were yummy. I'm sure there are lots of things you could do if there was a powercut.
Trying to spend less time on MSE so I can get more done ... it's not going great so far! :)
Sorry if I don't reply to posts - I'm having MAJOR trouble keeping up these days!

I'm a bit of a candle freak - esp smelly ones. I love Yankkee but find if you need a longer lasting smell use the wax tarts. I have a sweet pea one in my holder for the past 5 weeks & its still burning lovely! I have it on every day & if I'm in all day its on then. I go though a lot of tealights!

I got 10 of them off Ebay for £7 with free P&P & they're about £1 each in a Yankee store) must keep away from the Yankee store in Chester on Friday!)

But everytime a Glade/Airwick is on offer I buy one. Coop have one for £1.96 but I have resisted buying one - as I have 12 ready in the cupboard for winter!

I remember last year when the snow was heavy, kids off school & DH home I lit one & it was lovely & romantic!
  • Annie123 I've already joined the forum on metmonkey but I still just dont get it, ah well i think I'll give that site a miss, too complicated for me :(
Thanks for the tip on netweather.tv will have a good look at this instead, thank you :)

Frugal so happy for you, hope you're enjoying your open fire. My newly re-opened parkray is now fully operational and, like you, I'm chuffed to bits. Yay....

Becky2 Do your upstairs radiators heat first? In my house the upstairs rads will automatically heat first and I would have the same problem as you if I did'nt have a pump to circulate the heat downstairs. Can you check if your pump is working, do you have a pump?

Ohhhhh this has my mouth watering as I've just thought of my favourite "cook on the fire in a power cut" pick me up ........

Roasted bananas with a choc flake in them .... sigh

If anyone's not tried them all you need to do is:

Get a banana & cut lengthways down the middle
Stick a Flake / Ripple etc bar in
Wrap in tin foil and bung in the fire for a wee while

Also works great on camping fires / BBQs in the summer:)

Note to self: never, ever buy another house without a fire in ever

I am drooling slightly! Don't want to wait for a powercut to try it! :D Problem is I cleaned out the fire thoroughly and have stuck a pillow and cardboard covered in foil up to keep out the draught and had no intention of unblocking it unless I really needed to. Hmmm, this might count as a need!

If you mean the ones where a tea light goes in the bottom and then water and essential oils on the top, then yes you can. I break some tart off into a mini silicone cupcake mould and put that on the top. That way there's no mess and you can swap over to different scents easily.

Great. Yes that is the one I mean - thank you. I have ordered some from fleabay :D

I don't have any silicone moulds so I could like the top with tin foil - not beautiful but functional :D
