Part of the Furniture 1,000 Posts Photogenic I've been Money Tipped!
I went out to work in that horribly heavy rain and remembered something I meant to add to my winter list : Waterproof trousers  I have a waterproof coat, but the rain just ran down that and onto my jeans. By the time I got home (less than an hour later) my jeans were soaked to the waist as they'd soaked up the rain from my thighs where my coat ended. I was so cold it took a hot drink, hot food, hot bath and then leaning on a warm radiator for 15min to get my thighs the same temperature as the rest of me  I was then chilly the rest of the day despite wrapping up until I had a small tipple tonight. Now I'm lovely and toasty :o Debating about having a tablespoons worth of whisky in the morning to fire up my internal boiler :rotfl::rotfl: I don't think my liver would thank me though! :o

That's what I noticed the most today, that icy chill as the wind blew...I have always been quite hardy but now I will make certain I am wrapped up well when outdoors if the weather is bad, thick coat and/or thermals, gloves and perhaps a scarf.

Must find some thick winter scarfs. Got a feeling they may not have been unpacked from our house move in February.

How do you use the bubble wrap. Do you just stick it to the glass, or does it have to cover both glass and window frame? Sorry if this is a dumb question -I'm a newbie!
I havn't actually used it but I believe you face the bumps towards the window and just tape on.
My mam uses a film though, thicker than cling film but similar, which does the job too. x
    1,2 & 5p: Christmas day food £9.31
    10 & 20p: misc savings £2.70
    50p: Christmas presents £3.50
    £2: holidays £2.00
  • I won the coat I was bidding on so now have a decent length coat heading my way yay! Last winter I struggled in the short jacket I have.
I've got long jeans ordered too and a cardy.

I've managed to get the room upto 21degrees with no heating on for hours so me and the cats are very comfortable considering the weather!

    Nicki,
Waterproofs on offer at present at Lidl's and Aldi's and assorted other cycling items...

If you can afford some whisky...go for it. So many pleasures are having to be denied...it's like turning the clock back.

Being suddenly made aware of my low income and problems coming to many, I am now even more thrify so if I can get anything now that will last me, I'm going for it.

I don't want to be outside in the cold unless I have no choice but I'll make certain I have the right gear to face it. Its bad enough being cold indoors.

So from now on gloves, hat and scarf if needs be. Heck I may wear some items indoors(bedsocks and wollen hat)

Even if you look daft, if you are warm and it saves your life I don't care. Then again I hope by doing so there are still some good times ahead.

Next Monday/Saturday I have to use the bus to go the theatre, a rare treat. I hope the weather is better than today...

I'll not going out unless I have to if this is what's coming...

Well MM, I may do something similar and I don't care what it looks like(or that I am renting from an HA)trying to stay warm and spend as little as possible is what matters.

Fantastic! And I don't know how you did it but congrats on getting your room up to that temperature.

A gas bill has come in for £27 but not sure how long that covers me for and as I am now longer with BG that is probably just them tidying things up as for the next 12 months both electric and gas comes from NPower! If that is for three months that's £9 a month but I have hardly had any use out of it. I doubt it will change much with NPower.

well, i don't think we got quite all the draughts in my warped bedroom window as last night the gale was sending driving rain against it all night. it was so loud i found it very difficult to sleep

last year the entire window had been so warped i could not for the life of me open it. i must have left the handle up part way because one night during a storm like last nights it was literally sucked open! it was actually helpful as the warmer months were coming and now i knew i wouldn't melt in my bedroom because i could open the window but frightening too!

this window has the main part and an inner window that opens out to the side vs being pushed out from the bottom. i made the mistake when i first moved in here 3 years ago of opening the inner window. i've never been able to get it to latch properly since. it's mostly flush at the top but the bottom half is so warped that's where the worst of the gap is and the wood has split a bit around the latch/lock fixings.

last night i kept feeling the wind pounding the window then swirling and sucking at it (i swear we're in a vortex down here, you should see laundry on the line it moves all over the place in every direction when the wind blows) and i kept worrying that the force of it would suck that inner window enough to finish breaking the wood around the lock.

there is definitely still wind getting through so today i will have to get the incense out by the window to find the remaining draughts and put down some more of that foam draught excluder.

temps not too bad at least 19C with no heat on says it's 8C with a real feel of 0C, downstairs neighbour must have her heat on :T

I bought a pair of earmuffs last year which are amazing! They kept my ears so warm last winter and I have them ready to go as soon it gets cold enough. I strongly suggest buying some - they were a great addition to my winter wardrobe!

  • Well I did a long chatty post last night then lost it when my Greek server hiccuped and wiped it out. From now on I am going to copy it before I press the send button so I have it on hand should it get wiped out.

After putting my winter quilt on the bed and all the winter curtains up the weather here has decided we are going to have a heat wave! We are going up to 35 in the shade tomorrow and they are saying it will last till the end of October with the odd storm thrown in now and again. Isn't that just Sod's law? We usually have heavy rain and around 17 degrees here at this time of year. The nights are cooler but its still warm enough in the house from the heat during the day.

The good thing is it will give us time to recover a bit financially from the taxes before the winter arrives. It means we don't need to buy the wood for the fire yet and we can continue to ride our scooters instead of using the car. If we both ride our scooters it saves us 40 euros a week in petrol. They are very cheap on the insurance and economical too. My 50cc scooter only costs 45 euros a year for full insurance and 6.50's worth of petrol lasts me about ten days using it every day to go to the gym or town.

I have been waiting for some waterproof trousers to come into the Lidl's here but they are still busy selling summer stuff and gardening equipment. Obviously their buyer is still in the summer frame of mind....
