  • Lucy, would it be possible to put a shower curtain across the bath alcove to keep the cold in there? I know my bathroom is colder when I take the shower curtain down to wash, so I think even that would help.

    I do that :)

I also have a voile panel (for the time being) in the alcove's archway as another 'layer', hoping to get something thicker....

I have a damp trap pot in there but it's doing nothing after a week...

Two of the bedroom walls are external, ones abuts the kitchen and toilet and the fourth is adjecent to the common area stairs... Cold walls, I have a throw tacked against the main external wall.

Hoping my work leaving gift might be enough to go towards a dehumidifier form Argos....

We got one last winter as our flat felt quite humid (badly insulated and often cold, despite heating being on almost all the time  ). It made life so much more comfortable and in the end we didn't need the heating so much :) Not an OS product but worth the money :)

Also identified the need for a waterproof handbag. Going to have to put the contents in a carrier bag tomorrow until I can figure a solution. I bet it's more the case of saving for a solution though.

Have you got a leather handbag? If so rub some dubbin on it [get it from sport's shops], it's used to soften and waterproof football/hiking boot's.

My kitchen is an add-on on the back of an old terrace house and it's always freezing in the winter even though it's got a radiator. The back wall is fully tiled and whenever I cooked there would be pools of water on the bench at the bottom, salt used to always go damp and the room itself always felt cold and damp. Last year I got a second hand dehumidifier off Ebay for about £30 and what a difference it made, no more streams of water down the tiles, no more damp salt and the room feels so much warmer. It's only a basic one but it's surprising how much water it extracts, I ran it yesterday and had to empty the bucket twice!

It's also small enough to move so I stick it near washing on the airer and the clothes dry much quicker. I'm on the look out for another cheap one for upstairs.

I think mine is the older version of this one:

  • Actually felt a bit warmer in my flat this morning, because it was overcast. I find it's quite a lot cooler on the mornings it's been clear skies all night.

no i didn't know that thank you! i shall have to figure out how to do it, we've had her in adult shoes for a few years and adult clothing for a year now!

No problem! I think you take the receipts to the tax office, but they'll be
able to tell you if you phone them.

Hmm, fleece hooked up on the rail? Hoping you can get the dehumidifier!
  • It was a bit better last night but then again, it wasn't quite so cold outside either...

The maintenance folks are coming to check my bath and toilet extractors tomorrow morning, the flat was empty pretty much all year until I moved in last week so they are a bit feeble and rattly... Though the toilet one has improved since I left it on all day yesterday by accident

  • We actually wondered about lighting the woodburner last night, I think it's feeling cold because it's so damp at the moment. We didn't light it, but I always keep a few throws on the lounge furniture so we did wrap in those, but it was colder in the night too and I had to pull on an extra blanker - Winter draws on ladies and gents!!!!! Cheers Lyn .

We had the boiler serviced last night. That is one of the bigger jobs scratched off the list now. Just a few little things left such as putting the garden furniture away and protecting the cordylines.

Hope you are all well x :)
