Well, we've built another wood store out of a pallet and perspex to sides and roof. Pre cut logs left over from our delivery on Monday are now outside in that. One large pallet broken up and one more to do plus other scavenged wood that needs chain sawing. Garden bench is now in the garage for winter. Still a bit of tidying up to do in the garden but noticed my Dahlia's and pinks have flowered again:eek:

Had a sort of relaxing-ish day today although I have been busy knitting up an arran scarf, which I need to get done before the end of this month, so I am going to give a committment to that.

We had the heating on last night for three hours and used one unit of gas to do it - not bad I guess! I am trying not to use any heating tonight if possible.

  • I have just moved, smaller house and better heating system, so I am going through my winter prep list again. Not too much to do, curtains have been shortened to fit, plenty of throws and blankets for beds and sofa. I already had a good store cupboard built up, just need to find a cupboard to put all stuff in.

Will neeed to sort car out, and make sure I have stuff suggested in, need to travel a bit further for work, but reckon house savings will be morw than petrol costs.

Cold and damp here today, just put heating on for half an hour, to warm place up, so nice and toasty now.

Been trying to winterise my house or as best I can and have got some great tips from the thread. My biggest problem is that I have 2 windows in the living room, both fairly small and they really need blinds up but I MUCH prefer curtains! They used to have one rail with, bu 2 curtains across the pair of them but that came down below the sill and to me that means I would be losing a lot of heat from the radiator up behind the curtains instead of it coming inside them and benefiting the room. I am semi renovating the room so there are no rails up and I can put them where I want them. Windows measure 41" (104cm) wide and just over 52" (133cm) high, thats the actual gap, so you can see they are not exactly huge! Any ideas of how I can get curtains to go in there or am I going to be restricted to the dreaded blinds :(

    Evening.

I've got some news which may mean I can tell my existing LL/LA that I no longer require their services. My aunts friend is looking to rent out his (mortgage free) house. Its bigger than the one I'm in and it has a driveway etc. Cheaper than the one I'm in, both in Council Tax and rent. Fingers crossed.

Got 3 x 600ml tins of de-icer from Asda. £3 for the lot. Added this to my existing 150mll can.

Bought the LO 2x pairs of magic mitts and a hat/glove/scarf set. So he now has all of that plus a ski suit and his thick winter jacket. Our free spend money goes in on Friday so I'm going to buy him snow boots, wellies, some lined jeans and some jumpers. That should then be him sorted for the weather.

Is 20kg of rock salt for £10 a good deal?

Mulled wine ingredients ordered. The OH is Danish and the Scandis love their gløgg which is a mulled wine usually with almonds and raisins in. There are various recipes - I use red wine, orange juice, vodka if we want it more potent and cinnamon. In Denmark gløgg is served with http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%C3%86bleskiver which are basically jam donuts even though it translates as apple slices!!
Oh they look gorgeous - I love Scandinavian traditions - they really know how to do winter properly! :)
Trying to spend less time on MSE so I can get more done ... it's not going great so far! :)
Sorry if I don't reply to posts - I'm having MAJOR trouble keeping up these days!

Come on you lot - you know - curtain snails - they help to stick the thermal linings to the curtain as well as providing attractive ever changing silvery patterns - EVERYONE knows about curtain snails surely!!!!!!!!;)

of course! they come with their own adhesive! just the trick for hanging tricky curtains, better than no more nails i've heard :p:rotfl:

SusieT - I had the problem of having curtains above radiators and heat escaping behind the curtains. I made what I call a rad-guard. My curtains are home made and I had fabric left over. I found a piece of thick, stiff cardboard (hardboard/MDF would be ideal) and covered it with the fabric. I made it as wide as the radiator and as deep as the distance from the radiator brackets to just under the windowsill. The covered card rests on the radiator brackets with the curtains tucked behind.

I think I'm going to have an issue with the card bending eventually so will be looking out for hardboard/MDF to replace it. Covering it was easy - make a rectangular bag the same size as the card, leave short end open, insert card and slip stitch short end closed. If your curtains aren't home made find a remnant of fabric in a matching/toning colour to your curtains.

Doing this would mean you could go back to one rail with 2 curtains and not lose heat. Because the fabrics match it's not that noticeable and during the day I stand it on the short end beside my dresser beside the window. It has really made a difference for me.

Right preppers - I have this morning picked up a moulinex bread machine from freecycle!!! - and I am currently listening to the sound of it doing the hard work with some rye and kamut flour BUT wait for this - I have used my homemade sourdough starter - so more experimentation in this household than goes on in the average nuclear power station (thank goodness).
I love the people on freecycle and everytime I pick something up from one of them I count my blessings and hope they know how much they are helping me.

How did the bread turn out??? Sounds delish!!
Got off work early today so vacuumed and shampooed the hallway and family room carpets. Another thing to cross off the list. Nice here today, windows open to help the carpets dry.
Added walnuts, pecans and sliced almonds to the pantry stockpile today. Baking season will be here soon!
Finally down to 10 stone. Goal is 9. Making progress!
