Preparing for winter III

Hiya everyone,
Well we did a bit of prepping for winter. We got a sack of rice, biiig bag of pasta and some soup sachets with our shopping and not for winter but i bought all birthday/occasion cards to see us through til new year (26 cards!) for just less than £7
This week i plan to look at medicines on offer, particularly calpol (DS wont take the cheap stuffand things like toothpaste etc that keeps for ages. Im also going to get a curtain track soon for my daughters room and some curtain train to attach to her curtains (they are currently with holes for a pole and a bit long so hoping i can do this as i think the track will sit closer to the window. Im going to sew fleece on them whilst im at it. Ill do the boys curtains with the fleece at the same time.
After all the rain my garden has been left stupidly muddy. We have 5 chickens and 2 ducks and there enclosure is just a muddied mess. There is no grass and reading up this is really bad for them for prolonged periods (like winter!!) so we need to come up with a solution, a cheap one, for that by winter. Hmmm
Off to bed now, Husband is on his 15th hour at work today. Overtime as everything has broken (web developer) so thatll pay for the bed and mattress i bought from argos in the sale for DS. Bed frame was £119 to £48 and Mattress was £139 to £48 :T plus delivery of £9. Sodded off the bunk bed idea as was having no luck. This will do nicely. Everyone will have a bed and it will be dandy.
Night all

I like the idea of advance greetings card buying. It would be awful if you had to go out in deep snow just for a birthday card!... (remember some stamps too)
Then you'd just have to make it to the post boxThe beautiful thing about learning is nobody can take it away from you.
Thanks to everyone who contributes to this wonderful forum. I'm very grateful for the guidance and friendliness that I always receive from you.

I have a variety of greeting cards in my cupboard too. Card factory are really good. They did have 10 for £1 but yesterday it was 7 For £1. They are good quality cards though.
When recently sold our car and have got some road tax back. I'm putting the cheque into the bank tomorrow so that means we can get the curtain track for the bay window and curtains.I'm so very excited about it. Warmth in winter. What kind of things would you put in a winter car box?0 -
Umm. Winter car box. I was thinking a warm blanket, torch, walking shoes, bottle of water, non perishable snack, maybe a bit of first aid stuff. For winter some have a spare shovel in there. What about some salt to sprinkle under tyres in case your car can't grip to get going in ice? One of those gadgets that you wind up to charge your phone?
I'm sure someone else will pop along with more ideas.
I've asked mil today if she will keep an eye out for waterproofs for the kids when she does her carbooting/charity shopping. And I'm on the lookout for more cheap fleeces...Bossymoo

Right, I've cleaned out a cupboard ready for the stocking up of useful items for winter. I've decided it'll be mainly tinned goods, but also dried and some toiletries. I'll have a spare tube of toothpaste, some baby wipes (in case of frozen pipes meaning no water for washing), and some sweets & chocolate for energy. I've also worked out if I get an extra item or two a week with my normal shopping the extra shouldn't cost too much.
Besides, I can always use sweets and chocolate...
There was an earlier post with regards to winter car boxes - I'll have a look and see if I can find it. I currently only keep a scraper, a fleece blanket, window sunshade and a microfibre cloth in mine, so I'm looking to get a few more ideas too. I guess if all else fails, I can use my (reflective) sunshade to help people locate where I am!

Just in case it's of any use to someone without an Ikea near them, this fleece blanket is half price at Tesco Direct - you can click and collect for free.

Thanks for that, cheapest I have seen anywhere so I have gone mad and ordered 10 ( won't be enough for all windows but get me started) to be collected from my nearest store. Most likely will end up with all sorts of weird colours but I don't care, won't see them from the inside and from outside oh well will give a nice colourful effect to the house - am in a conservation area and they drive us nuts as to what and what isn't allowed so this will really annoy the 'conservation police' - neighbours who enjoy reporting anyone flouring the rules, but nothing they can do as will in inside the house - oh I love being a rebel and if no two are same colour even better.
I must remember to buy lots of safety pins as will just pin them onto the linings of the curtains.
Now off to see if I can find reasonably priced black out material for my bedroom curtains......Need to get back to getting finances under control now kin kid at uni as savings are zilch

Evening again!
Well Mr M had a fantastic offer on loo roll, limited to 3 packs ore customer, 9 pack of velvet loo roll £2.50 a pack. That's cheaper than the 4 pack! So obviously I bought 3. They didn't have many left in my local store but worth a look. Will do us a few month anyway!
Started on the medicine stores, allergy tablets, paracetamol and calpol bought, just 1 of each whilst i was shopping. And bought some metal trays for freezing food, the takeaway kind. Also bought a track and curtains for my daughters room, she already has blackout roller blind but needed a bit more, came to £15 all together, I took curtains up and the husband put everything up. They are lined but I'll line with fleece anyway as her room has no heating, though it is the smallest room, we have a plug in radiator for in there. Managed to double up the curtains in my sons room too, we bought 2 sets identical 2 years ago so figured if I double them up it saves me fleece lining his window! :T
Not much in the way of spending this week as really budgeting this month, but doing a tip run tomorrow as have a lot of garden waste to rid by winter. And hoping to start on making some xmas presents (we are handcrafting all this year). Cleaning the car out ready to sell, in order to pay off our finance, go Carless for a few weeks and buy a cheap people carrier before baby 3 arrives. (22weeks tomorrow!).
Anyway, best get some sleep! XDFW Total £21,800 to clear by Dec 2022

I looked on the Ike@ website and it says that the cheap fleeces are not available at ANY of the stores I looked at.... looked at london, south and midlands... very disappointing... suspect that if I actually went there, they would have them but definately NOT worth making a special trip.
Frugal they're back in stock in Croydon, South London, check your local store0
