Preparing for winter III

Bitterly cold here but no more snow yet. The hills are covered and yesterday when we were out walking we could see down to our valley which was green surrounded by white.
Both freezers are still pretty full as is the store cupboard. I feel less stressed about snow this side of Christmas as I'm not worrying about DDs travelling home or how are we going to get across to MILs on Boxing Day etc. There's only DH and me here for a few weeks now and we eat most things so meals will be easier if we are snowed in.DH can work from home sometimes or he can walk down to the station0 -
I noticed the moon was lying on its back last night - it was totaly odd! Never hear that saying though!
I'm yet to see snow (damn!) but there's a sprinkling on Snowdon & that is it. I NEED IT!!!! Would love to get out & play with the kids!0 -

Remember I said previously about my grandfather saying that when the moon is on it's back bad weather is on the way? Last night the moon was very much on 'his' back and given that old saying has proved right in the past it will come to pass I think again this time round.[/QUOTE]
I noticed that last night while standing waiting for car to warm up, sky was totally clear with lots of stars twinkling and moon definitely was on his back rather than usual straight up and down for a half moon, wondered at it for a minute but knew had seen it like that in past so never went on looking at stars, as don't see many by me to many street lights. I had not heard the saying or if had forgotten it, oh well we have a snow alert so I wonder if we will see any or just frost.

I've heard of people putting a ball in their pond to try to prevent it freezing but not sure how effective it is.
This is very effective! Do it every year with the horse's water, sometimes if really cold you have to wiggle the ball a bit but it normally works!Anchor yourself to the foundations of everything you love.
Thank you to all those who post competitions!:beer:0 -

Now snow here but to make up for it we have lovely bright sunshine, freezing yes, but if it continues till I feel a bit more energetic (ie when painkillers fully kick in) I might just go and and sort out area in back where fruit bushes are to be planted, got as far as empting pots out onto ground over soil but that is it, they all need broken down and plant matter removed then fresh top soil and compost added - fruit bushes are currently all dumped together in a very large pot with a full sack of compost covering most of them. Must remember to ask hubby to bring round a sack of top soil and compost - I get it delivered and driver knows now to put it at side of house ( he doesn't even bothered to knock now) where it lives under black sheeting until i need it as no room at back and anyway need it for side garden, when I get round to making the beds there.
Definitely is type of day you want to be outside and am itching to do so but no made it out of bed yet, mind is willing but body not grrrrr.......Need to get back to getting finances under control now kin kid at uni as savings are zilch

Hi
no snow here, its sunny! but very cold.
does anyone know if there is a long range forecast? my birthday is on 11th and i have plans and im wondering my chances of waking up to snow! lol.0 -
When everything was frozen recently, including the bird bath, I placed a large jam jar with a lighted nightlight in it on top of the ice. OH laughed but it soon melted the ice and burned until it got dark and cold again. Birds flocked around it and seemed to enjoy their 'hot tub' Make sure that it's a big jar (I used an old gherkin jar) which will be stable. Don't know if chickens would knock it over though...The beautiful thing about learning is nobody can take it away from you.
Thanks to everyone who contributes to this wonderful forum. I'm very grateful for the guidance and friendliness that I always receive from you.

I wouldn't dream of laughing at you! Parking where I live is a nightmare, but during the winter I try to park near a light, generates enough heat to stop the windscreen freezing over. I say try, as someone has cottoned on to the fact so it can be pot luck for me to get the light, sadly I am up against an SAHM, so I seem to be losing out nowA smile costs little but creates much0 -
Good evening ladies and gents!
I'm back after two months of house moving prep, unpacking and settling! Alas we are in the middle of winter in a new home and I didn't get the chance to prepare at all for the winter here so I'm making up for it this week with the cold weather!
Can anyone suggest what they do with their air bricks or wall vents during the winter? We have two that I am considering blocking up. The first vent is located in a first floor box room high up on the wall making the room noticeably colder. The second vent is located at floor level in a back room - at least in this room I'm sure it was installed because the room initially had a gas fire (but does not any more).
Before anyone worries, we do not have any gas appliances other than our combi boiler venting directly outside and I do know that we need to ventilate the house to deal with condensation (we air it and have a dehumidifier that runs nearly 24 hours a day).
What are your suggestions? Should I take the cover off and stuff the holes or block the back of the vent covers?
All tips greatly appreciated and apologies if I missed any tips in my initial search in this thread!:A Thanks to all the lovely people who contribute their advice! :A0
