Welcome back Miaomiao, hope that you and your family are settling in to your new home :)
I wrapped a couple of air vents in our cold back extension with bubble wrap and masking tape. It seems to help and I'll be able to remove them during warmer weather.
Gettingtherequickly, it's nice to know that I'm not the only one who 'does things differently' I remember reading on here of people who placed heated wheat bags or hot water bottles on the dash while scraping ice off the rest of the car. Might be worth a try if you can't get your parking spot back! :)
The beautiful thing about learning is nobody can take it away from you.
Thanks to everyone who contributes to this wonderful forum. I'm very grateful for the guidance and friendliness that I always receive from you.

  • Well our council is obviously expecting rather cold weather as they came and gritted the road, even though its a main road we are so far out they rarely bother and as on the border nor does adjoining council. Last winter it was done twice and winter before once which meant road was actually rather slippy and traffic stayed away which was nice. At moment its -3 out there so don't know if it will go lower. Poor hubby has to leave for work just before 6am I do not envy him.

    Stay warm and safe everyone

Im so lucky as my new car has heated seats and windscreen :j:j:j
I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer.
Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration.
I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over and through me. When it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path.
When the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.
  • Thanks, Eenymeeny! I'll give that a try : )
:A Thanks to all the lovely people who contribute their advice! :A

Just read the DM & it seems the cold weather is here for a few weeks & "the army is on standby" (what for I don't know!) so I'd better re-stock the freezer with bread & the store cupboard with the things I've been eating - just in case! I'd given up on a very cold winter so started eating the goodies!
  • Morning all, I'm going to try a new method of cooking on top of my woodburner today. I recently managed to get a brand new Fish Kettle on E Bay for peanuts and I'm going to try putting a stew and a dumpling mix into some kilner jars and see if they cook in a water bath on top of the stove. I'll start off with boiling water in the fish kettle and see how long it takes to cook through. If too long we have tomorrows lunch and not supper today. I don't know if it will be successful but, it should be akin to cauldron cooking in the middle ages I'll let you know how it goes. Cheers Lyn.
  • My own winter-preps were done some time ago and not really needed to date. Even though I live in the outskirts of the city, if there's a big freeze, heavy snow and a consequent disruption of supplies I AM NOT AFRAID! If I have to drag myself out of here into the cold to a shop all I will need eventually is fresh milk after I've exhausted my long-life cartons. I reckon I could hole up here for a couple of weeks at the very least. An extended power-cut might be a different story but the bed will be warm enough for that, if a tad boring during the hours of darkness. For daylight I have a stack of unread books two feet high. Bring it on, God!

Gosh now that is what I call tempting fate :rotfl:

My stocks have gone down a bit as needed to use food money for other things so have been living off them for a few weeks so this weekend I have to do some shopping to build them up again, so am slowly writing a list to buy as much as I can with money that will be available - about £40 at most. Feb is an expensive month as hubby is going away for a bowls competition which will cost us about half our income for the month - no we cannot afford it but cannot make him see that. Thankfully all other winter preps are done and so as far as I know I do not need anything else if there was to be a powercut.

That reminds me must check the car starter which I bought not for starting the car but as an power source for charging things up like mp3 player to ensure something to listen to if no power. I fully charged it when I bought it but must check if still full.

Oh gosh yes do need something else - matches only have one box left, so they must be top of my list.

Here it so very dull today and temp has not go above freezing, so have biobulb on to give illusion of daylight, oh yes took last Vit D yesterday so must buy more today when out buying oldests sons birthday card as have to get it sent to Melbourne for his birthday on Valentines Day.

    Stay warm and safe everyone.

I used to do it when I had to pick my then teenage son up from work at midnight. It was really cosy when I had to sit in the car until he finished!:):);)
Someone mentioned running out of matches. I bought one of those old-fashioned gas lighters (for lighting gas hobs etc) from a pound shop years ago. I find it handy for lighting bonfires, lanterns, candles etc and hasn't needed refilled yet! It doesn't blow out like matches do too.;)
