They said the same about October which turned out one of the warmest on record, so it probably means snow in Scotland which for November isn't news and cold and frosty for the rest of us, but if they say that every month through the winter they'll get it right eventually.0 -
Stupid question alert - do I need to worry about LPG pipework from the canisters to the house...?
Otherwise, I need tinned things, bottled water, and Christmas presents....
One small annoyance is that I use coconut oil instead of body lotion etc - it's gone rock hard now!"She who asks is a fool once. She who never asks is a fool forever"
I'm a fool quite often0 -
Oh yes, that's what the article omitted to say, RainyDays, that with sensible precautions people will fair better. The mega storm conditions we're had in recent years are statistically unlikely. But I'm still going to do all I can to be prepared. I love whoever's idea to have emergency lit at work just in case.
I hope once our stove is in and running that heating in general will be easier... As will Need gas central less, therefore will feel happier using it when we need to.Relax, Breathe, Love 2014 Challenges:Cross Stitch Cafe Challenger 23. Frugal Living Challenger. A list of weather predictions taken from here: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/debate/newsdebate/f/t-10229610/p-231/index.html?threadIndex=2
Piers Corbyn - an extreme cold period with huge snowfalls from 27th November to 28th December.
James Madden - a very severe winter with temperature and snow fall records being beaten.
Mark Vogan - cold setting in Mid December followed by an exceptionally cold January.
Brian Glaze- initial thoughts were that this Winter would be less severe but now clearly toward a very cold winter. Full Winter forecast to be issued later.
Joe !!!!!!!i-Weather Bell - very cold but not as severe as last yeat, but more prolonged cold than last year, all winter months below average temps and high amounts of snowfall. Full forecast soon to be realeased.
AccuWeather - mild Winter with little snow.
WeatherOnline - similar to Mark Vogan with cold setting in Mid December followed by a cold January.
Met Office - no longer issue long range forecasts so they dont really count, but they have said that they dont think this winter will be as severe as everyone says its going to be.
Positive Weather Solutions - talk of an extremely cold end to the month followed by a very cold December.
NetWeather - mixed and less severe than last Winter, but still a cold winter overall for uk.
Peter o'donnel -Irish weather online has forecast a below average winter temps wise. He said december will be a mixed bag, with a few very cold snowy episodes mixed in with some milder interludes so an average decmber overall. He then said january could be very cold ,just as cold as last december but with more precipitaion so more snow. He stated that january could be 4-5 degrees below normal and seeing as january avg temp is 1 degree lower than december and december last year was 6 degrees below avg this january could be as cold as last december but even more snow. He then said feb would be mild, but then march would be quite cold with a return to wintry conditions.
Then Daniel Smith on this forum ,a very good forecater in my opinion has forecast a very cold start to winter, with the second half of november being very cold and snowy and then whole of december being very cold and snowy also.
Weather services International has said this winter will be below avg temps wise. They say itll be cold and early winter but less severe than last year. They say the worst cold and snow will be in mid november to end of december, they believe the la nina will once again be strong so they think that jan and feb will be much warmer than nov/dec like last year.Link to their forecast-thttp://www.wsi.com/ec1c5e30-6883-47c2-bd44-ce26d03abddd/news-scheduled-forecast-archive-detail.htm
TWO weather going for very cold winter-Link to their forecast -http://www.wishawpress.co.uk/wishaw-...6495-29657776/
Wouldn't it be helpful if they said which parts of the UK, here in London it's usually just cold and wet in the winter:(0 -
Evening peeps
HelenYorkshire - Stand the tub next to the oven/hob when you are cooking or in the bottom of the shower so that some warmth gets to it, the edges at the top will have melted enough to scrape some of it out.
Frugal - We have a well insulated loft - the insulation is so old that its disintegrating but its still doing the job as the snow on our roof didn`t melt last winter when others were doing, we have a water tank up there and pipework and it was ok. The water tank (which is part of the heating) has some sort of jacket on it. I can`t go up and look as i`m scared stiff of coming crashing through the ceiling lol, you can`t see the rafters to step on. The pipework that we had trouble with last year was the overflow from the cold water tank from the airing cupboard.
It was dripping and we didn`t realise so it froze and gradually filled the pipe with ice so the tank overflowed into the airing cupboard:eek:
The inside water pipes at Dads froze last year!
Not much in the line of prepping going on atm, i really should be sewing the curtains up but cba, i`ve had a busy day and just want to chill, the heating is still off and i`ve just turned off the fire but its warm enough and the candles make everything look cosy
SDPlanning on starting the GC again soon0 -
i thought that article was odd 21 degrees in the day? isnt that pretty much what we have now anyway and 16 at night well its 14 here now....unless they meant Fahrenheit? In which case if the daily fail cant even distinguish between Celsius and Fahrenheit then anything they write is subject to much speculation.
I personally am not AS prepared as id like to be but much more so than previous years.
I would like a good chunk of inches of snow this year as we never get much and as im not working now i would love to be able to enjoy it rather than worrying about how to get to work.
Winter is Winter it will be colder than summer, that much is almost guaranteed, no need to panic
Im excited about snow though really really excited!!Everything is always better after a cup of tea0 -

I wonder if anybody knows the answer to this...
I am concerned that the fact I have such good loft insulation and the house is generally really, really well insulated, does that put my pipe work in the loft in danger? I assume the answer is yes... However, since I now have an open fire, and therefore clearly a chimney, will the heat from the chimney keep the loft warm enough for the pipes not to freeze?
Puzzling.....
Oh...do you have an open fire now Frugal?
I thought I heard something about it somewhere.....was it the BBC News, The Daily Mail, Telegraph? Hmmmm, let me think :rotfl:Normal people worry me.0 -
Today i have made a list of all phone numbers i will need in a Emergency and placed it with torch and spare candles ,checked the smoke alarm and topped up the batteries box, totally forgot to pick up a kettle to use on the gas stove or camping stove if the need arises so will pick one up tomorrow.
