Preparing for winter III

I'm not a fan of the Daily Mail (honest) but something caught my eye recently about the weather we are supposed to be expecting. The Mails source was an esteemed scientist who has successfully predicted the last two winter's low temps and he's predicting even lower this year.
The man behind the headlines is not a scientist at all, he's an armature weather forecaster called James Madden.
He has 2 web sites exacta weather http://www.exactaweather.com/Home_Page.html and http://globalcoolingnewiceageuk.blogspot.com/
He started predicting the weather in 2009. Yes last year he said snow is coming early but so did many others, and his forecast for jan/feb/march was wrong.
The newspapers circulation increase by 10% when they have a weather story to print, whether it will happen or not, as in the case of wide spread snow in october as the paper printed. To be fair to James he said snow could come as early as October or Novemeber, but to the newspapers it sounds so much better if the headline reads Snow in October, which isn't what he said.
Scotland, Wales and the north of England will get snow this winter they usually do but that's not a headline. The rest of us may or may not.
An excellent forum is here : http://forum.netweather.tv/forum/1-weather-discussion-and-chat/
Lots of ideas, forecasts and opinions of all the professional and amateur forecasts.
Statistically we shouldn't get a bad winter this year across the country as 3 cold winters in a row are unusual........unless you're in Scotland etc but that doesn't mean it won't happen. We seem to be breaking all sorts of weather records lately.
All we can do is learn from how we and others handled previous winters, prepare the best we can and keep calm and carry on in the true oldstyle way.:D0 -

A headline caught my eye in the Supermarket this morning. The Daily Express had the headling Siberian Winter Well obviously I had to have a quick read of it while browsing the magazines.. Quite depressing really as it says we are due to get a winter like last year, although it might not be as long but definately as severe. Even the Met Office have got an alert system set up now.. Personally I think I will just look out my window or watch the snowflakes when they appear. Better think about sorting out my christmas bits to send abroad i.e. my stitched ornament exchange to the US..plus various other places abroad.
Although I did say to someone else that was reading the same piece how much of a surprise this was NOT. After all it is winter now, and what usually happens in winter? Yep it is cold and sometimes snows..lol
Shame Bill Fogget isn't with us anymore, now that guy was spot on with the weather predictionsMortgage Free as of 20.9.17Declutter challenge 2023, 2024 🏅 🏅⭐️⭐️

james madden is closely linked to ATS tyres. He is NOT a meteorologist, his job is to sell tyres :rotfl:
his spouting rubbish has clearly worked in that many people are getting winter tyres early
The cold due later may or may not be as bad as last year. Data is still unclear0 -
I must admit I find it hard to believe that we are going to be inundated with snow as early as mid November when I have my doors and windows open, and the washing blowing on the line. This is normally unheard of for me in November.. I haven't even thought about putting the heating on full time yet - I did put it on for an hour about a fortnight ago but that was because I am not well and I was absolutely freezing even when wrapped up in a fleecy blanket.
I would never think to buy winter tyres although I have had new Michelin tyres put on the car - but that was only because I needed new tyres..
I will check each morning when I open the curtains, although due to the snow last year I had a magnificant display of roses etc..Mortgage Free as of 20.9.17Declutter challenge 2023, 2024 🏅 🏅⭐️⭐️

hi all, gosh you're a chatty bunch. i've read back 3 pages and it's only to yesterday!!
we've been away for a long weekend -stayign with very kind friends so no b&b costs, but still an expensive time. did get a lovely velvet dress for the xmas work parties for 25 from M&S Outlet in Street, and also M&S thermals! black thermal vest (8.00) and black thermal leggings that due to the holes look like fancy foot less tights, so at 12.00 i'm really happy! at 30, i'm just so rock n roll! :rotfl:
the builders did a great job on Friday putting in a new lintel and hearth tiles, then plasterer was coming monday and stove fitters tues. Plasterer didnt come till tues...so no stove :0( . And no phone call to say the plans had changed. We got in at 10.15 last night after a very long drive to find All lights on downstairs (even for rooms we'd shut off), plaster splatters over the furniture we couldnt move out (ie, plasterer didnt put down dust sheets), filthy kitchen & dining room floors and sh*t in the toilet. Not a nice homecoming. sorry for the rant, it is relevant to winter prep as we've still not turned the CH on so were hoping a fire would sort us out nicely. harumph.Relax, Breathe, Love 2014 Challenges:Cross Stitch Cafe Challenger 23. Frugal Living Challenger. No buying cleaning products. I used MSE advice to reduce my car insurance from 550 to 325!! & paid it off in full!!!0 -
23rd - what a dreadful mess to come home to - what in heavns name was the plastere thinking??? How can ANYONE think its acceptable NOT to put down dust sheets for a platering job - he must be a cowboy surely?
Re being chatty - its been really quite quiet in the last week - we usually go on and on and on , but I think this spell of mild weather has taken the wind out of our sails a bit. Im sure it will pick up again once the snow comes!debt free 2021 at current DMP rate[/COLOR] (probably be in an old peoples home by then)0 -
Oh 23rdspiral I hope you took plenty of photos of everything, for your claim against the plaster. It always gets me mad when workmen do things like that, they would never do it in their homes and would go mad if anyone did. It seems to be happening more and more these days, if it doesn't belong to them people don't care and so many no longer have pride in their work. I hope you can clean everything up, just what you do not need before Christmas. I have never sued anyone but for something like this I would happily do so. Good LuckNeed to get back to getting finances under control now kin kid at uni as savings are zilch

Does anyone know of anything you can get for people who already need to wear glasses to drive? (something to fit over them?)
TIA

Ohhhhh that's not good Spiral:( I had to get my bedroom ceiling replastered last year after a roof leak and the plasterer was the same - splatters everywhere - I wasn't best pleased. There's no excuse for that and also for leaving the loo like that :mad:Grocery Challenge £211/£455 (01/01-31/03)

Am in the middle of a big dilemma ..... only have around 3 months supply left of one of the cats dry food which means it'll run out at the beginning of Feb at the best (they tend to eat more in the winter too so it will probably realistically run out in January). It's gone down quicker than expected as other other cat has started to eat it too!
Have been looking around for offers so I can get online while still at home but not found much TBH. PAH did BOGOF a few weeks ago and got some of the other cats dry but stupidly didn't get any of this at the same time (I would've had over 4 months at that point and funds were a bit tight to buy both lots).
Have found for £48 with a freebie massage centre (I'm a sucker for free things) and I've a 10% off voucher which is only valid for another 2 days..... but I've found elsewhere for £44 so the voucher is really only saving the difference which is a bit annoying.
However, if I run out and have to buy locally, it costs £56 so a bit of a difference.
I'm only at home another week so option of hanging on for an offer is really limited .... (especially since PAH have changed courier & now need a signature which is very annoying as I used to order loads from them)
Why is nothing straightforward - honestly if I took as long with my own food, I'd starve!:oGrocery Challenge £211/£455 (01/01-31/03)
