Preparing for winter III

I think my quilt is only a 4.5 tog and its a bit too cool when i sleep on my own. I find even with no heating a 10.5 is a bit too hot when theres two of us. I stuck a blanket over the top of the quilt last year. It didnt look very glam but it kept us both at the right temperature (even if i had to dress not to impress but for warmth) but i want to get something a bit nicer this year hence the idea of the bedspread. Ive seen one that i like but am mulling it over in my head because its more than i really wanted to pay. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. i think my blanket pile is seeming a little daft now, we have a 13.5 duvet, and depending on the temp i add an extra blanket layer, last year we were up to 5!!! but i still had long jammies and a hot water bottle too!!!! oh well, at least i can snuggle downNonny mouse and Proud!!

My 4 month old kitten did that a few weeks ago...:o and has "christened" the living room and bedroom curtains too...:o. Even weeks later, he still thinks about doing it and has to be gently guided to the litter tray. I've also threatened him recently with the big litter tray in the sky. I know, I'm cruel...:rotfl:
The other sabotaging of winter prep by kitten has been to hide the hot water bottle stopper. He was playing with it during the night at the weekend, and I was too lazy to get out of bed and take it off him...now, despite having a tiny house, I can't find it....
... and yet, he looks so innocent...:rotfl:0 -
I found Tesco throws are the softest and nicest looking and put one over the bed when it gets really cold although normally its folded at the bottom of the bed for the cat to sleep on. Think you can use double up vouchers on homeware at the moment in Tesco.0

Ive never had one before but i am on the hunt for a bedspread to go over my quilt. Last year i resorted to wearing almost as many clothes in bed as i wear during the day.
My electric blanket broke the year before last and i really missed it last winter but i'm determined not to replace it.
I got one years ago from a charity shop but it was old fashioned looking so I stitched patchwork pieces straight over the top, looked fab and made such a difference in the winter, cos the flat i had back then had no heating and you really did freeze there.1,2 & 5p: Christmas day food £9.31

 I thought I was bad with my 7.5 tog & a blanket on!
Trying to sort through drawers/cupboards etc as I'm a terrible hoarder:o - I've loads of material and trying to think of something useful to make ..... (without success so far!)
Still, I've managed to clear out 2 drawers, one now filled which has freed up another storage tub elsewhere so I've somewhere (finally) to put all my tools in one place:) and one still empty .... mmmmmmm not for long!;)Grocery Challenge £211/£455 (01/01-31/03)

I've managed to find space for:
- clothes: a PJ top that could pass for an ordinary one plus jogging bottoms and a cardigan, socks and slipper-socks
- a small super-absorbant towel
-a make-up bag with room for travel-sized cleanser, moisturizer, deodorant, wipes, toothpaste, a toothbrush, a couple of lemsips and a couple of days' supply of other medication I take
- some of those squeezy soups and some hot chocolate packets, that just need hot water, and a couple of cereal bars.
- charger - the spare one that can do my kindle and the phone.
It takes up surprisingly little room and anything else I'd be likely to need are either carried around with me or in my drawer already.
Thanks for this tip, Singlestep. I think I'll adapt your tip to shove an overnight bag in the car at the first hint of snow. Last year, I always managed to struggle home (20 odd miles of country roads, therefore unploughed/ungritted most of the time), but it really was touch and go, and so horribly stressful. I always leave plenty of food and water to last the pusses a few days, so if I have to bunk down under my desk(!), it would be good to have my toothbrush and clean knickers with me. I already have my sleeping bag and various car related things in the car ready.
As usual, I hadn't really given it any thought...so, cheers!
Lavvy x
P.S. Also, just thought, last year, my boot froze closed for days on end (tried hot water, a strong man etc - no joy), so when it starts getting colder, I intend to put my emergency box on the back seat or I may not be able to use it when I need it :eek:0 -
QUOTE=prepareathome;48205563]I heard about this many years ago and so actually put it to the test oh about 20 odd years ago, as the house we lived in then only had one toilet, only house that did and never again, and it started to leak by the floor so had to turn the water off to it and of course could not pour water down, so as I had this idea written down from some library book I used it until we could get a plumber, was over Christmas holidays so we must have used this for about 4 days and it worked brilliantly, at that time we did have a cat so had plenty of litter, now no cats just dogs so I have cat litter in just for this emergency. -
I forgot to say plastic bags to line the bucket. Then you add the cat litter and I found the chalky type is much better at stopping smells - you put some in bucket ( that is lined ) then when it gets wet you can either scoop it and put in dodgy poop bag, or if bags in short supply just add fresh litter on top, it will not smell, but I found the woody type cat litter does smell and doesn't clump as well, falls to bit. For anything solid of course you do scoop out and put in bag.
When you think about it, those that have cats you do not put down fresh litter every day, you scoop it out, and no smells, but you do not need to buy the most expensive, cheap chalky will do.
It sounds awful but basically no worse that when you visit places abroad.
Bucket can be any type that fits inside toilet, its only to hold the cat litter, just remember to line it so that bag can be removed tied up and thrown away. You can easily see ( and smell) when its time to do this, for one person up to a week, for a family might be daily.
I know its laughable but it made life so much easier for us - there were 5 of us at the time, now just hubby and me. Kids did go yuk I am not using that, but as there was no where else for them to go short of asking neighbours to use theirs, which they found even more embarrassing they soon got used to it.:D[/QUOTE]
Again, such an incredibly useful tip. I had never even considered that the water supply might dry up.
With all the cat litter in my house, I'm well set without spending more. I might just hover over a litter tray if I can't get to my bucket in the shed. Good exercise for the thighs too :rotfl:
Editted to add...I don't mean I'd be going to the loo in the shed, just would need to get my bucket out of the shed...:D
I think I'd better get back to work now0
