Hope everyone keeps warm over the next few days - I'm off to warm 28 degree Spain tomorrow for a week :j

Well, I got back from Spain this morning where it has been up to 30 degs - and I'm perished - which is why I'm on this forum. Just put on a pair of thermal socks - mind you - I'm a mean b**g*r - won't put the CH on till it's absolutely necessary! enjoy your trip!
  • Just my two pence on thermal leggings. I have a Primarni pair, which are warm and thin and can pass as regular leggings, but after about a couple of months of regular wear, they went very baggy at the knees and became less elasticated at the waist :(. I also have a thicker M&Sp pair which are still going strong after four years, but look really obviously 'thermal' so I only wear them under trousers.

I have to be very careful with thermal tops as they can aggravate the eczema on my inside elbows, so I have a couple of long sleeved thin cotton plain pyjama 'lounge at home' type tops from Primarni and H&MM. These don't seem to wick the moisture out of my skin as much as ordinary thermal long-sleeved vests do, though they're not quite as warm. Nobody has ever laughed at me for wearing them in public (under a cardigan) as they just look like long-sleeved warm tshirts!
Keep calm and keep crafting :happyhear

I got caught in a hailstorm on the way to school this morning. Left my brolly at home in teh mad rush in getting DD2 out the door - DD1 had already left. DS was home with DH (poor mite was throwing up last night). I'm hoping to see snow on the peak of Snowdon later if the clouds clear!

DS is now wrapped up on the chair sleeping like a log.

I used to (and still do) wear long sleeve thermal tops under a t-shirt. It looks trendy, and is what skiers do on the slopes so that they can strip layers of when they need to. Do this in the winter lots. Of course I also wear thermal longjohns under my trousers too! Who's going to see?

Its so cold at work in the winter that I have a blanket in my cupboard to cover my legs. I've threatened to buy one of those USB slippers and a slanket to wear too. Must remember to take feet out when I stand up though :rotfl: I work for the council and have threatened the Chief exec with showing up at one of his meetings with a slanket on if he doesnt get the heating turned up in his room. Not sure if he thinks I am joking or not. I'm not! :D
If you dont want it - dont waste it - Freecycle it!
  • Anybody got any tips on where to buy a bargainous winter coat?
I am looking for one that won't get all wet and soggy if it rains or snows.

    Thanks.

I was hoping you could help, I need some thermal leggings for the walk to/from work, and I was wondering which are worth getting? I'm loathe to buy some from Primark in case they turn out to be rubbish and I have to buy more from elsewhere, as that would be false economy, yet I don't want to spend M&S prices if I can get decent ones much cheaper. Any recommendations?

After buying all sorts of thermals from Primark, Peacocks etc and getting sick of the leggings shrinking to pedal pusher size, I bought some from M and S.
They are the best thermals ever and the vests are long and the leggings are high at the waist which means my back stays lovely and warm. They haven't shrunk at all.
I bought them in black as I thought they would stay better looking for longer.

Quick question for anyone with open fires - how much coal do you get through a week?

I am buying in 10kilo bags atm and although I have some left, I reckon I will be using a bag every 5 days  That works out at 2 kilos a day - £1 a day for coal  It is supplemented with free wood but still, I wasn't expecting to use so much.

    hi everyone,

thanks to this thread i have now got a list of tasks to work through to winter proof our 1930s semi - moved in in May, and naievly didnt really think about winter and the things we'd sorted at the last place years ago but we now need to do here.

though i'd lurked for a while, i dont recall anyone having "get neighbours phone numbers". Our over the fence neighbour is in her mid 80s, so for peace of mind i think we should get her number, and perhaps more importantly her daughters number. we keep an eye on each others houses, take bins out if away ect, but i think winter means we should step this up. we live at the top of a hill so i could get her milk ect when it's icy. Elderly neighour care is important to remember.

downstairs was 14 degrees this morning. humidity was a little high. chilly. still not put the heating on though! i managed to bag one of the 5.99 (rrp 39.99) weather centres from Home Bargains, so will use the remote censor to tell us the outside temp, or poss even the shed!

have clipped the other duvet on so now have the full winter tog. + patchwork blanket. the flannel sheets are waiting till winter bites properly.

couldnt see car window protectors in Tescos :0(

had a chance to test winter sofa preparations... fleece blanket on top of the leather / fleece blanket on top of me / hot water bottle and me wearing my Honcho (bit like a slanket) as i was feeling very porley with a sore tummy. was frugal at least, i couldnt face dinner :0(
Relax, Breathe, Love 2014 Challenges:Cross Stitch Cafe Challenger 23. Frugal Living Challenger. No buying cleaning products. I used MSE advice to reduce my car insurance from 550 to 325!! & paid it off in full!!!
