Quick question for anyone with open fires - how much coal do you get through a week?
I am buying in 10kilo bags atm and although I have some left, I reckon I will be using a bag every 5 days  That works out at 2 kilos a day - £1 a day for coal  It is supplemented with free wood but still, I wasn't expecting to use so much.
depends how long you have it on for each day tbh, i try and build it sensibly unlike others in the house who just throw it on!!
if i tend to it i can make a 10k bag last over a week, normally to about 10 days, inc using logs and without it getting cold, if they do it 5 days is normal, and this is only on from about 3-4pm with last load on at about 8pm on weekdays (damn work!!)Nonny mouse and Proud!!
Never argue with an idiot. They drag you down to their level then beat you with experience!!

COAL - last year when it was really cold (-8 etc) or here I was gtting trough a 50kg bag of smokeles coal in a fortnight. At £20 a bag this was significant so I was not really happy when it couldnt warm the bedroom radiators and was back breaking work. Thats why Im using electric rads and have stuffed chimney shut!debt free 2021 at current DMP rate[/COLOR] (probably be in an old peoples home by then)0

What is the best way then?I think I come under the 'just throw it on' category
I build my fire with a full layer of coal, kindling on top then 1 or 2 logs but as the coals burn I keep topping it up...0 -
Thanks for the wedding congrats, not getting nervous much
Think I will go for the long curtains and just tuck them in, I know I'd regret buying the shorter ones.
Thanks for the hair scrunchie tip Frugal, read about the magnets over door locks, but mines won't take either, not sure what the heck they are made off but magnets just won't stay on. Actually might need to think of something else as I don't have any scrunchies (short bobbed hair)!0 -

Where are you getting it from? (10kg seems quite small bags for a coal merchant to sell - they usually do either 25kg or 50kg bags).
They are substantially cheaper than buying from supermarkets, filling stations, DIY places (and it's put right where you want it without you having to lug it around:)) so if that's where you're buying from it may be worth asking around locally for a good coal merchant.
If you don't have one (sorry can't remember whether you're rural / town based), there's a few places that sell coal online so again it might be worth checking the prices to compare.Grocery Challenge £211/£455 (01/01-31/03)
2016 Sell: £125/£250
£1,000 Emergency Fund Challenge #78 £3.96 / £1,000Vet Fund: £410.93 / £1,000
Debt free & determined to stay that way!0 -
