OOps - meant to put in original post - other authorities maybe different.

However I still would try ringing the local Social services dept.

    Hi

My mother is 76 years old and got osteo-arthritis of the spine, neck and knees. She has severe discomfort and pain when standing and walking. When she does need to walk, she uses a walking stick and also takes painkillers.

Her doctor, will not complete the form for a blue badge. He makes some excuse about I have 10 of these a day, and most walk with no problem. I have pointed out that she is in pain all the time. She even went to our local hospital and saw a consultant, who basically said there is nothing than can do for her because it is old age and wear and tear.

    What can I do.
CHANGE YOUR DOCTOR.... Even fit people have blue badges, just look at most car drivers with badges and try to spot the disabled one !!!!Your Mum should have no problem obtaining one...

    Hi

I have recently been issued with a blue badge thanks to my GP who practically bullied me into applying for one.

  • Hi I know it will cost but have you thought of finding a private Dr , If you give them a call and ask if they will help the call will be free and you could find out how much they would charge. I really think you should talk to your mothers PCT about the attitude of her Dr
    good luck.

I have a friend with a young disabled son and a blue badge and therefore, in this case, the car driver does look perfectly well.

you could try contacting the social work department of your local authority.

Fill in the form and send it to the issuing office for your Local Authority, they should send it to your Doctor, then he will have 11 to fill in that day, it should not be up to you to get the Doctor to fill it in, it becomes the responsibility of your Local Authority to send it to the Doctor.

Do Not Let Them Bully You!!!!

    Good Luck
  • Bypass the doctor and get the social services to give her a medical and they will see how bad she is.
Hopefully she will get a blue badge soon after.
I'm not poor i'm just skint
  • I agree, speak to social services. My granny finally applied (82 - all sorts of ailments) having put it off for ages because she thought it would be difficult, she filled out the form, no medical, no doctor (she would never have applied if she had needed to go to see doctor) and got one straight away. She was already getting attendance allowance but maybe its not worth doing too much checking on someone of that age?

As for the healthy drivers. A few years ago my Dad was given an earbashing as he got into his car which was parked and displaying an orange badge. He was given the earbashing by a passer by for "abusing the system when he was obviously able to walk". He was quite taken aback to be spoken to in this manner by someone who didn't know him. The badge belonged to his friend, a severely disabled man, who dad had just walked up to the opticians 200 yards away - a distance the friend could only manage with help otherwise he needed his wheelchair out. Dad had gone back to move the car in case someone else needed the space!

I agree with the sentiment about changing your doctor in this case. But don't forget that you can also make a complaint to the Primary Care Trust about the doctor too. They have an arbitration scheme which I have used. I got something I never thought was possible - an apology from a GP!!

If your mother won't change gp then it seems going through social services may be the only option as they would surely ensure your mother's gp filled the form out?

I'm only in my early 40's but I have osteoarthritis of the neck, shoulder, lower back, hip and knees so I can understand the pain and difficulties your mother has and cannot believe the unsympathetic attitude of this doctor. I've just been approved for a blue badge which I got through a form via the local council office. They sent it on to the "Social and Health care" department which I'm guessing is part of Social Services - I didn't need to speak to my gp or take any form to him as they did it for me. I hope you can get this sorted out for your mother as she should certainly qualify.

I agree with PennyPincher that you cannot tell a person's ailments by looking at them.
It is hard enough to deal with the many restrictions I have physically without the level of rude, unjust remarks I regularly face. Like many others in similar situations, I wish I could still work, do every day activities etc without thinking about it - I would rather pay for parking and have a fit healthy body to take for granted again! The badges are issued to the person to use in any vehicle so please think before judging the driver!
