Hi
My mother is 76 years old and got osteo-arthritis of the spine, neck and knees. She has severe discomfort and pain when standing and walking. When she does need to walk, she uses a walking stick and also takes painkillers.
Her doctor, will not complete the form for a blue badge. He makes some excuse about I have 10 of these a day, and most walk with no problem. I have pointed out that she is in pain all the time. She even went to our local hospital and saw a consultant, who basically said there is nothing than can do for her because it is old age and wear and tear.
What can I do.

How about asking another GP in the same practice to sign the form?
Does she get DLA? if she gets the higher rate mobility then you can get a blue badge without a letter from your GP (my partner got one this way).0 -
You can only get DLA if you are under 65 yrs. If you get DLA high rate mobility component, you just have to produce the letter to get the Blue Badge. If you do qualify for DLA before you are 65,you can continue to get it after that, as long as you continue to meet the requirements. After 65, the equivalent benefit is Attendance Allowance, but there is no mobility component for that, so that doesn't help here.
What about the consultant, will he sign the form? Good Luck!I'm a retired employment solicitor. Hopefully some of my comments might be useful, but they are only my opinion and not intended as legal advice.0 -
Department for Transport Website
It is at the local authority's discretion, ie, it depends where you live. I would suggest getting a different doctor who will sign the form.
DLA is only awarded up until the age of 65. Attendance Allowance (claimed at 65 or over) does not have the mobility element.Torgwen.....................

Hi
Thanks for your replies, there is only one doctor at her practice, so no chance of getting it signed by another doctor. The consultant at the hospital has moved on now and does not work there anymore.
One option I suppose is to register with a new doctor, but that takes time and also alot of practices are not taking new patients.0 -
Perhaps someone could go with her to help persuade the doctor if she is unable to swap?Torgwen..........

Hi Fran
I did go with her on this day, and I explained everything to him. Still he wasn't moved by this.
I think the only other option could be to report him to my Local Health Authority.0 -
If I had such an unsympathetic GP I'd change to another more caring oneI'm a retired employment solicitor. Hopefully some of my comments might be useful, but they are only my opinion and not intended as legal advice.0

write to him enclosing the form, stating that is he cannot complete it to inform you what the full reasons are, also in writing.
If he/she is just being lazy asking them to do something like that will probably make him complete the form.0 -
you could try contacting the social work department of your local authority.0

The only problem is that you have to buy the book!
