  • Unfortunately I didn't survive divorce. Although my ex-husband was ordered topay solicitors costs, however we have been left in £20k debt due to mortgage shortfall after selling marital home. I'm now saving to pay off my half and should have done it by next year. So my advice is to just be thrifty, cut back on all uneccessary items like gym memberships, mag subscription and I also stopped paying the pet insurance (i'd moved to my mom's house and the area was much lower risk for traffic etc), and I gave up smoking too... although I reallywanted a cigarette at times!
I'm now doing alright... and when this final debt is paid off I will be free from all debt.
It's a fact of life, divorce costs money, but you can make it easier on yourself by cutting back for 12 months.

You have to deal with it practically and emotionally.

When still single my brother bought a house in his name and "rented it" to me. I bought a house in my name and "rented it" to him.

Evebtually we both married. After 9 years of marriage my wife left and her solicitor wanted her share of the house, what a surprise they got to find I was just renting.

I then moved overseas for a couple of years and transferred my money.

On an emotional level I have always found that when a relationship breaks up it is best to get involved in another on ASAP this means you don't have time to brood over the past.

But I imagine, Bob, that your ex-wife would have been entitled to half of the house your brother lived in. Unless you lied about having it...?
