  • I'm 73.Just bought and moved into a sheltered housing apartment in Blackpool. All electric. The previous owner sadly passed away after only 18 months in the flat. She had obviously recently bought one of these heaters and it was left to me as part of the purchase.I moved in on the 22nd of Sept, and spent the next 72 hours (honestly!)glued to the meters to see what I was using, not realising that it wasn't on the Econ 7 circuit.Early last week I realised that it was a scam heater(before I saw this thread) and pulled the plug.I am now using a 700 watt panel heater (that was also left in the flat) with a timer that I have, for the last hour of the night rate, and,up to now, haven't needed to use it during the day or evening.I've just had some extra sockets installed today, and the in-house spark offered to install a new design conventional storage heater costing about £700.If his claims about this new heater turns out to be true,I think I may be tempted!.In the meantime,if you want to fiddle with this over-priced radiator, you are more than welcome,I'll even throw in the instruction manual as well which I had to send for!.I dont feel that I've lost about 2 grand,as I got it for free anyway........:D

I would love to pull it to bits and read the chips themselves - I'll be happy to pay shipping.

Given what your sparky has said and the cost, I would guess he is talking about a quantum heater.

It is a good system IMHO, but a Duoheat may also be adequate and would cost less per unit.
  • Thanks for that, and, indeed, other comments and advice.:)

Many people will be scammed in their own home this winter with these german storage heaters . The media only reports on banking scams. I will be writing to the PM David Cameron to protect people in their own homes from being scammed with these heaters. If you have bought one of these heaters and your bills have increased then you are a victim of this scam. Contact your credit card provider as they are legally responsible to do something about getting your money back. You are also a victim if a £20 heater would achieve the same results as a £2000 heater. What makes these german heaters expensive are advertising cost, door salesman commission, directors wages, etc. You can buy german heaters from Amazon for around £600, the overheads are smaller hence the price. But be warned they will achieve the same results as a £20 heater. Anyway got to go, taking my £7 hair dryer to be Birsa tested. Will then sell it for £1000.
Not everyone is a scam artist but they are not difficult to spot.
    All my opinion.

Went to visit elderly relative with dementia and discovered he had been taken in by these.

Has 2 storage heaters, but insists one is not working (I have doubts on this, as it is modern, but can't argue). Anyway, he saw advert in Daily Mail from a Scottish company and had salesman call. Was told that it would cost at least £200 for him to have his storage heater repaired and gave him a 'special offer' of a clay filled heater (obviously a plug in similar to oil filled radiator, but with clay panel inside) usual price £880 but he could have it for £440. Assured him it would heat up very quickly and retain the heat for a long time.

From advert relative showed me it gives the impression that this is a storage heater, but does not say this. Wording is something like "Having problems with your storage heater, we have the solution with our new heaters".

Relative insists this is a storage heater, which it's not, but won't hear any argument against this. As he is on E7 I've tried to emphasise that he shouldn't have this switched on overnight and that during the day he will be paying a high price for his electricity. He won't hear anything to suggest that he is not thinking clearly, so nothing more to do. As he keeps the house like a furnace, I dread to think what his electricity bills are going to be.

Only consolation is that somehow salesman didn't persuade him to have these heaters fitted throughout the house.
  • Another very important thing is to watch how fast your electricity meter spins when these german heaters are plugged in. Make a note of the reading at the start and at the end. Now work the maths and compare with the cost you were told. If it tallies...... good luck.
  • If you are one of these salesperson then buy it from Amazon and sell it on to your client for a reasonable profit. Do this in your partners name/company. Your boss would have started the same way. No need to feel sorry for the investments your fellow colleagues would loose.
Not all bosses are devious or started this way. Well, i know of some people who lost on investment.
  • There is only one German company i know which is Wibo who sell these heaters. Their customer service is excellent. They make their own heaters and supply. All others are companies set up in the Uk who import these heaters from Germany or wherever. Some of them would have worked for Wibo in the past saw how easy it is and set up their own import and supply business. That is why i say do it yourself. If you can keep a straight face when you sell these heaters you will do pretty well. A £20 heater controlled with a thermostat will achieve the same results.

Always ask your UK supplier if the heater you are buying is assembled in Germany or MADE IN GERMANY. Also ask them if any part is made outside Germany i.e. China, Dubai, India etc

Please note that in all my post past and present, i do not refer to any particular company if i do not mention their trading name. Hope the Uk government brings in new legislation to protect home visits from these sales people before i turn 40.
