Paypal release the money on day 21 if no feedback is left, i actually got feedback 2 days after day 21 on one occasion.

The whole point of a hold is safety for buyer and seller, the buyer has paid, the seller can see the funds on there transaction page, it simply has a hold on it. this is prob the first high value item the seller has sold, i can now sell high value no prob at all, but as my previous post when i first sold a couple of things the hold was there.
No, the whole point of the hold is to protect paypal. It doesn't protect the buyer, and definitely not the seller.
The hold on funds is there, so must be dealt with properly by the seller. But don't regurgitate the bs paypal dish out about protecting everyone. It's the same sort of crepe the government uses to bail out the bankers.

Hammy - look up "escrow" on Wikipedia. It's an involuntary version, but it's basically the same thing.

And since you're in business, I'm wondering whether you've ever heard the term "30 days credit"...

@Macfly - it is to protect Paypal, you're right, but it's to protect them if a scammy seller sells something for this value and thinks they can do a bunk, leaving them with all the expenses of refunding the buyer and having to chase them up with debt collectors.

  • I understand that paypal have to protect them self, sellers and buyers but I think 21 days is a bit much I sold a new riding hat on ebay £115 hat for £41 he got a bargain the buyer as not left feed back I sent him a message asking if he had received it but he as not replied whats stopping him from using it marking the velvet and sending it back saying its not as described just before the 21 days are up ??
I am not a seller its the first item I have sold and I stupidly left him feed back

Yes, I know why paypal do it. It's interesting though as many buyers on here feel that losses for ebay sellers, postage on change of mind returns etc., should be "built in to their business model". Can anyone see a similarity between what paypal are doing and what this particular seller is doing? Both wrong for me, but members are rushing to defend paypal, a virtual monopoly business making millions, yet vilifying a small ebay seller.
Brainwashing, or just an easier target?

You seem to have problems seeing that things are related. Yes it is to protect paypal but if paypal lose money they charge us more. It is also there to give buyers confidence. Confident buyers mean happy buyers who will spend money.

If a buyer can, and does, get his money back no matter what the nature of the seller, how is his confidence boosted by a hold on funds which most buyers are unaware of?
It's the propoganda I can't stomach. If paypal simply stated it was for their own protection, purely self interest, I would have more respect for them.

What's to stop him doing that anyway?

It's not his issue - he doesn't really know that you've had the hold applied and likely as not doesn't care.

If the item is in reasonable condition, and he is happy with it, then no buyer would really bother doing that just for fun.

If you don't trust your buyers not to do that, then perhaps eBay is not the best place to sell items and you would be better finding local buyers.

Sorry to sound blunt, but Oliver's comment about making buyers happy is one of the fundamental things about eBay. They have to be confident handing over that amount of money. Paypal don't want to be chasing scammers for hundreds of pounds - so it's something they have done themselves.

or he might just do that on day 40, as he has 45 days to dispute the transaction on paypal.

Anyway i dont think this thread is here to discuss paypal policy, the OP was asking for advice on a situation and this thread has slightly gone off topic of helping him/her out.

If someone doesnt like the way paypal or ebay is run then they shouldnt buy or sell on there.

OP - i would open a INR case as soon as you can, dont worry about your money just yet after all its on hold for 21 days. the quicker the seller sends the item the quicker they will get the cash.

You'll be deleting your previous post then?
It's ebay - not the moonies. Plus an open forum - if we don't like it we can say so, with your kind permission of course.
The OP's problem has come about because of this seller's worries about this policy. Nothing wrong with contacting the seller to reassure him.
After all, I think the OP may actually want the item, not a battle, seeing as he paid for it.
  • macfly why would i delete my previous post? i was involved with this thread going off topic, so i was trying to get it back to helping the OP. this thread has long gone past the part of helping the OP.

Instead of trying to cause arguments like a small child, why dont you start your own thread and call it, Paypal's 21 day hold policy, discuss here, then you can have as big a discussion as you would like.
