This is a BIG con, Spoke to some staff have a cig outside and they said the price drop is nothing big and they have had loads moaning about it, Dolmio extra mushroom bolognese sauce 750grams £3.34 buy one get one free, It was before the price drop about £1.88. Who in the right mind will pay £3.34 for one jar (when not on offer)

'Tesco's big price drop' should be renamed 'Tesco's big rip off'. i went in there the other day and noticed b ugger all reduction in anything. I am sticking to Asda and Aldi.

I popped in to asda at the weekend thinking it would be cheaper than tesco, I was surprised to find things like carrots and beef a lot more expensive than tesco, seems you really do have to shop around to get the best prices these days, even Lidl isn't as cheap as it used to be, in fact some of their stuff is more expensive than the main supermarkets

I have to agree with the big con, it has been an excuse to effecrivelty put up prices by some of the eliminating offers.

For example, before the proce drop the Tesco extra mature cheese was £3.99 for 500 gram block, or 2 for £5. Now they have taken away the 2 for £5 (which made them £2.50 each) and are advertising they have brought the price down to £3.19 (from £3.99).

On face value that does not look to bad, but when we look to the 250 gram block, of EXACLTY the same cheese, the price has not changed, and they are still on the old offer of 2 for £3.

So before, it was cheaper to buy 500 gram with 2 smaller blocks, now it is still cheaper.

Effectivlty this price drop is a smoke and mirrors price decrease, with some decreases that actually amount to increases as they are using it as an excuse to get rid of the offers.

*If* they had brought proces down to that single items were a good proce, simialr to the B1G1F etc then I would have been happy. But this is not a price cut, as if you were buying a single 500 gram block before you would have probably bought 2 x 250g for £3 rahter than a nrmal priced 500 g block.

So, if you want to by 1 kg of cheese you can either buy 2 x 500g for £6.38 which is a 27% increase, or 4 x 250 gram, which is a mere 20% increase.

Back to Asda and Sainsbury for me.

Back to Asda and Sainsbury for me.

It seems like people who buy larger quantities will be worse off, fortunatley we are only a small family of 2 adults and a baby (wasnt that a movie) so it seems we will be better off.

Although for cheese lidl is probably the best place if you have one near you i think they are £1.99 for 400g
  • best thing to do is check mysupermarket and see if it works out cheaper for you, luckily for me we have a choice (and a small bill as there are only the two of us), if its a pound and more convienient to go to tesco (as in tesco open and asda closed) then fair enough, i dont believe the offers are worth the hype for one second

a good price on buscopan (google it- they are over the counter medicine i need fairly often) can make a huge difference to me
Who remembers when X Factor was just Roman suncream?

jjones, I have no problem if there was someone who would be better off, but if you read the post, you will see for those of us buying more there will be a signficant price increase, and for those buying smaller amounts, the proce stayed the same; you could buy 500 grams of the cheese for either £3.29 which is the new reduced price, or the £3 offer that has been on all along and remains in place. So, as long as you were looking at prices (comparing 1 big and 2 smaller blockls) the smaller family purcases are not benefiting from any lower prices. Hence the reference to smoke and mirrors. I expect the next move will be to reduce that offer.

Thanks for the suggestion about lidl, will try it, but a couple of years ago tried it an no one here liked it as they like really strong cheese. Have found Colliers is on offer for £2 at Asda so will go there :)

Tesco WILL get away with this CON. I have said it numerous times before but when it comes to food people in general don't care how much it costs as long as they can stuff it down their gob. One of the most outrageous examples of this is Starbucks and other coffee serving outlets. They charge an absolute fortune but people flock there like sheep - I guess they think it makes them look sophisticated and continental- Well I think they look like mugs(and not the coffee variety)

Tesco (and all the big supermarkets) have always been in the business of making profits. They're not there to be nice to us or feed us healthily or cheaply. They just want to make money. Every single time they change anything in their marketing policy it's with a view to making more money out of us. Where's the surprise in that? Why are people so surprised at this latest one?

The answer, as ever, is to shop with your eyes open, a calculator in your hand if you're not fast at mental arithmetic and a cynical attitude towards every single deal. I see the vast majority of shoppers at my local Tesco wandering around the aisles like zombies, yacking into their phones or staring into space and just throwing their shopping into their trollies without even looking at the shelf edges. I see trollies going through the checkouts with items I know are double the price of the brand on offer, or just one half of a BOGOF, or £100 of junk that doesn't add up to a single meal. These are the shoppers Tesco is targeting, the ones that don't actually pay attention apart from being briefly distracted by the word "deal" stuck in fromt of them at eye level. Tesco doesn't particularly care about the sharp deal shopper, except for running the odd glitch or limited promo to get us into the shop in the first place. Are their marketing team stupid? I really do not think so. They've got their target market pinned...and it's not us.

  • I make a point all the time of checking how much my stuff is costing before I buy it and ALWAYS check, my receipts.Last week they had chestnut mushrooms on offer at 50p a box of 250 gms but when I checked my bill I had been charged £1.00 I went to CS and got a quid back as their machines had got it wrong But if you think that maybe in the course of a week several million folk paid over the odds for their mushrooms then Tesco's are doing very nicely .At no time did the CS lady call a assistant to change anything it was a case of I had challnged them so I got my mushrooms for nowt and a quid back, cheap at half the price for Tesco's and I don't suppose many folk do look at their receipts but I make a point of doing it.
O.K. maybe its only 50p, and not a lot but 50p when you live on a pension could buy something else .So do read you bills if you get a chance as its these small mistakes that make Tesco their millions profit

Currently £3.34 in Sainsburys without any offer - I can't imagine they are selling many though!

Incidently this is 2 for £3 in Asda or £1.50 each.
