Getting done over by the jobcentre !

I don't believe anyone directly answered his question, perhaps I missed it in the three pages of nonsense. As far as I'm aware he could turn the job down on health or safety grounds and should probably put in a complaint too.
I did answer the question.
But yes the thread has gone off piste.
Oh no someone will now suggest he should ski in the snow. The most potent weapon of the oppressor is the mind of the oppressed. Steve Biko0 -
and yet i see many rolling home at the same hours with skimpy clothes on
Not after doing a shift with Nissan though...0 -
You are allowed to refuse a job offer if the travelling is more than 90 minutes each way. As you don't have a car and are reliant on public transport, the journey home would take far longer than 90 minutes as you would have to wait several hours for the bus. If it were me I would refuse the job on those grounds and if they do sanction JSA I would appeal.0

who was that aimed at?
if its me then i managed after doing deliveries without issue
I used to cycle home from work while chef'ing with 12+ hour shifts being the norm
i think people have got too used to cars
13 miles on a bike really is a breeze
ah you added a quote. so how does doing a shift at Nissan make it more of a safety issue for women?0 -
13 miles is nothing with regard to commuting distance ......
I agree with this bit BUT it's a long way for a beginner cyclist, even a young one.
Not one medical professional in the land would recommend or endorse someone who has not cycled in years, immediately going to cycle 26 miles a day, every day.
I do think the OP should go all out to keep the job, but I think some of the other options suggested on the thread are more reasonable than 'get on your bike'.Herman - MP for all!0 -
lights can be got cheap
In the last week there have been all of the above for under £10 on my local gumtree
I prefer the view of short term pain, long term gain
13 miles is nothing with regard to commuting distance and for a short term 'pain' of cycling it could be a long term job for the OP that is only 13 miles away
Well thats just perfect if you happen to have a spare cash around to get a boke, high vis, lights, protective clothing helmet.
I certainly dont have a spare 70 quid ( if this is possible!!) to buy a bike and everything to go with.
Like many people out of work there is no money left in the pot for large capital outlays. Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.
Theres no dollar sign on piece of mind
This Ive come to know...
So if you agree have a drink with me, raise your glasses for a toast :beer:0 -

thats fine,luckily only lights are a legal requirement0 -
Why can't he buy a car on finance, now that he's going to be in full time work?
I haven't bogged off yet, and I ain't no babe

are you suggesting he does 26 miles with no helmet in the dark
besides: no point in having the lights with no bike..
Hes better to get on liftshare type websites... Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.

Don't most loan companies require you to show 3 months wage slips or the like. (Proof of income for x amount of time anyway.) I doubt anyone would lend him money at the moment.
Perhaps his bank might consider an overdraft given the circumstances? Depends on previous relationship with the bank though.Herman - MP for all!0
