no but if he was already working there there's a good chance that he will be able to arrange with a work college to get a lift for a short while.

Its a bit much for someone to walk into the job, not knowing how they are going to get home on the first shift and start asking total strangers for a lift home.

and there might not be anyone
sometimes you need to hoof it yourself
when by bad luck (2 cracked frames and a duff bottom bracket) i was left with no bikes and my car was off the road
I had to walk over 3 miles to the bus stop,to then get 2 buses and another 1/2 mile walk to work
the 3 mile walk took longer than my cycle to work
would you say walking 3 miles is too much?

The problem i have now is they are saying that if i dont start this job on monday they are going to santion my jobseekers allowence for up to 6 months where do i stand or what can i do .
I don't believe anyone directly answered his question, perhaps I missed it in the three pages of nonsense. As far as I'm aware he could turn the job down on health or safety grounds and should probably put in a complaint too.
  • I would'nt really fancy cycling 13 miles at that time at night, very hardcore!. You certainly would nt be a lard !!!! if you were cycling that 26 miles per day, next year you could sack work off altogether and go for the Tour De France instead!
Best bet is asking about the possibility of a lift with you sharing the petrol costs or getting a scooter or 125 motorbike!.Till you can afford a car.
Im surprised that nobody has suggested sleeping rough with a bivvy bag ! lol

    13 miles is c*ck all
do people have no drive these days?
  • Is not just the distance, its the saftey aspect at that time of night and I dont know if the person is a guy or a woman, but not many lasses I know would cycle that distance at that time at night alone!

Look the bottom line is: for whateer reason it may not be practical.

It wouldnt be practical for me as I have health needs.

OP must have considered whether its suitable for them. before askig the quesitons.

For a start some people do not own a bike/crash helmet/ highvis/ lights etc.

Its also not quite as easy to just "move" as many are signed into a tenancy agreement!
 Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.
Theres no dollar sign on piece of mind
    This Ive come to know...
So if you agree have a drink with me, raise your glasses for a toast

it depends on loads of factors. If the area is safe to walk through, what time of the day/night and how totally shattered you are after your shift. 3 miles isn't a lot for someone fit and healthy, I used to walk 3 miles to work and 3 miles back when I was in my teens. I couldn't do it now though.

    lights can be got cheap
In the last week there have been all of the above for under £10 on my local gumtree
i got the job and the money when/if i start will be great .

I prefer the view of short term pain, long term gain
13 miles is nothing with regard to commuting distance and for a short term 'pain' of cycling it could be a long term job for the OP that is only 13 miles away
