Public Sector. Good or Bad?

  • Are there 20 million job vacancies in the public sector then?

nb on average public sector employees receive far greater remuneration than private sector.

There is a vacancy freeze at most LA's. Public sector employees who are managers and higher get paid a lot, admin, secretarys etc dont.

Id say for those of you who hate us so much should be glad they dont work in the public sector as there are so many wage cuts and redundancy's now you wouldnt have a job for much longer.

Public sector workers are hated by everyone now although there was nothing stopping these haters from getting jobs there seeing as its such a cushy number.

Maybe most don't know some one high enough to help them get through their squeaky clean employment process.;)
Many jobs advertised were crossing the t's and dotting the i's.
Many rolls people were "told";) to apply for it,(EG you will get it) and job descriptions were tailored to fit certain candidates before advertising.
I can't say that is true across all PS jobs, but my wife knows of many examples where they would basically know who was going to get the job before the interview process had stated.

Oh right - a front line librarian.

I like books and reading but still think too much money is spent on libraries - if they are that great why do only old people use them?

All age groups use libraries. Maybe where you live only old people use them but where I live there is a huge variety of ages.

Look at your attitude towards me because of my job. What terribly important job do you do then?

God I love coming on this discussion thread. So enlightening.

Thats just not true at all. It's well known that the public sector pays less than the private sector for people doing equivalent jobs. I've been offered jobs with up to 50% salary increase in the private sector for basically doing the same thing. I don't do it though because I'm happy where I am. The public sector makes up for it through very flexible working, shorter hours and better pensions.
Faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity.

I agree, this did go on (and maybe still does although it would be more difficult) I got in by accident on a temporary contract then foiled their plans by applying and gatting a permanant post.

And this is why a lot of people took lesser paid jobs, the pension and flexible working especially if you have family committments (not just children, parents and other family too)

TBH I am fine with it as it happens in the private sector.
But what they should do is stop the idea that everyone can apply and the job is open to all. (basically stop the red tape as we all know recruitment in the Public sector is very similar to that in the private sector)

Just give it to the person they wan't and save everyone else's time (interviews) Money (travel) and the advertising cost
If a job is genuinely open they should then advertise.

On flexible working, is that not a fairly new thing for the public sector though? I would say the vast majority joined way before flexible working became the norm.

Not according to the ONS who try and measure such things. According to their last report (July 2011) workers in the public sector were being paid 7.8% more than their private sector equivalent.

No that is not equivalents, thats an aggregate figure.

ONS statistician Jamie Jenkins said the public sector employs more older workers, and has more highly skilled jobs. Nearly 40% of those working in the public sector have a degree or higher education qualification compared with less than a quarter in the private sector. If those employees are compared, public sector staff earned 5.7% less than those in the private sector.

Think you will find that the PS employs more with the "Micky Mouse" type degrees than the private sector.
