The Sunday Times today says most public sector workers are getting pay increases

To be fair, this is a girl who's Dad calls millions of people who he's never met "scum", "filth" and "thieves". And doesn't known how to spell or use grammar either. So I wouldn't worry all that much about the influence your teacher is having on your kids, I'd start with a more close to home investigation.0 -

Not quite true.
Average tax on income around 25%
Employee NI around 10%
Employer NI around 10%
VAT on all purchases 20%
That alone comes to around 65%
If you buy petrol etc it is even higher.
Plus council tax etc etc and the majority of any earned income goes straight to the public purse.0 -
Based on http://www.petrolprices.com/price-of-petrol.html taxes come to something like 80p on fuel worth 48p. If we include this in your numbers you could be paying upwards of 200% of your income in taxes! No wonder people complain about our tax burden.0

I'm in the DWP, I received an increment of £600 and a £780 performance related bonus.
So I can't really complain. I would like to think I'm worth more than my annual salary though.
I do know of "a few" people on my floor of around 100 staff that received 0 performance bonus........0 -

I work in the private sector and haven't had a pay increase for four years.0

It's interesting, the public sector incorporates a lot of people, from street cleaners to generals (although they'd call themselves Crown Servants). Quite a group to lump together: SAS trooper and Mulitcultural PC Gone Mad diversity co-ordinator, both paid from taxes, little direct tangible return to the community from their service.
It'd be nice to see which public sector jobs are valued, and which are not, rather than lumping them together. Bit like me blaming the gas man for getting £30k instead of £25k because I'm paying more for gas... private sector, yet reflected in my bills: "If only they'd pay them 50% less I'd pay less for fuel... or not have any at all."
Otherwise this is just pointless Daily Mail envious bickering from tools.0 -
If you read my posts you will see that I agree with this. I've said that again and again. It's quite right that the public sector should be lean and effective, we're all paying for it. And you're quite right that a private sector employee can do whatever they like, we're not paying for it.
I'm just saying that on here it's often implied that public sector workers are rubbish and lazy whereas private sector employees are beacons of efficiency and productivity. It's this view that I dispute. I've seen brilliant people in the public sector and rubbish ones in the public sector, and vice versa.
Oh I agree completely, but I'd wager the % of those in the private sector is a lot lower, simply because most companies won't carry them. In the public sector there's very limited pressure to perform, it's a much safer job.0
