I applied online to open a NatWest silver select account. Online everything went fine, account approved, immediately offered an overdraft that I accepted but reduced. I clicked the ID check online and that part of the process failed, but the screen said the application pack will arrive in the post and I would need to take ID into the branch.

All fine, but one week later I have heard nothing. No text, no email, no postal info. So I went into the branch and there is nothing on the system. So she suggested I make an application in the branch. :(

Will this mean another credit check, and will the fact that I applied online count against me (ie they may think I'm opening lots of accounts)?

What has happened to all the info I entered online?

I wanted to avoid going into the branch in case they try to sell me all sorts of products.

It appears if there is no trace of your application is was not recorded anywhere as they may have been a glitch at the time.

Have you checked your experian and equifax report have you been credit searched?

If you dont want to re-apply in branch make an application over the phone instead 0800 148 8323.

It's quite possible that the branch either didn't know how to look for the online application or didn't want to.

Applying again shouldn't affect things with this application but it's not impossible that another credit search is made.

They searched by name and only found my third party authority on my son's account.

Another credit search isn't a problem, as long as I don't get rejected because I have already made one application.

And I don't want to end up with 2 accounts!

I would wait a while before going to open a 2nd account, it could take several days for the online application to be processed and the application pack to be posted to you. As you said, you do not want to end up having two accounts opened by accident.

I assume you know that the Select Silver Account is a fee paying account where you have to pay £8 per month for the facilities it provides ?

That is sensible and good advice from the last poster, however you would be able to cancel the second account under "cooling-off". Though the account "would never exist" on CRA, unfortunately any "search" remains.

I know this is advice after the event, and no doubt you are kicking yourself, but its essential to take screen prints at important stages in any application process. Don't know whether the particular process suggests the "offer" is printed?

If you have "proof" that the bank cannot substantiate you may wish to raise a Complaint.

£8 a month for phone insurance, plus love film subscription is the cheapest deal around. I came across this account while looking for iPhone insurance; much cheaper than anything I've seen around.

No printing, you have to wait for the application to arrive in the post. Then take to branch with signed forms.

Screen prints would only have given me proof that I had applied, it wouldn't have enabled me to open the account if the details never were processed.

  • Did you take the application reference number in with you when you went?

There are at least 4 ways of retrieving a pending application that we use.

You say you are already a 3rd Party on your son's account, so you would have already submitted some form of ID when you were added on his account.

I guess in one way, applying in branch *may* have been easier, and quicker, as you already have some connection with the bank, yet you aren't an account holder. (You still have a unique number with the bank which holds all your details)

Lastly, the account won't be opened unless you sign and return those forms. So you could apply again, but will be credit searched - again.
Anything that I do say, is strictly my opinion :p

I don't have an application ref number.

As well as being 3rd party on my son's account, my business (ltd company) account is at that branch, so I am known to the staff there.

Up til now my main account has been with RBS, so I should have some history with the company, even if the systems aren't linked.

They should have still been able to retrieve it, unless as mentioned previously, there was a glitch or the staff member didn't know how to retrieve it.

You don't say when you applied for your account though - applications do drop off the system after 30 days IIRC.

Whilst both Natwest & RBS may be in the same group, having an account with one does not affect your immediate banking with the other. The only time it would, I say, is if your account had gone to Collections, and they would be able to set-off your debt.
