Septimus Heap, widely available from libraries, Alex Rider adventures - I'm 41 and like them, but they might be a bit young for a 16 year old.
Skulduggery Pleasant by Derek Landry is funny, has quite bit of fighting in it, and some pretty good plotlines.

Lord of the Rings is great, but can be dry and tedious in places, tbh!

If he didn't like the "grown up" Terry Pratchett, how about "The Wee Free Men" series - very funny and definitely very Pratchett, but less plays on words and a bit more action.

Maybe the Twilight Series and Vampire Diaries - so he can impress the girls with his knowledge of them ;) They aren't badly written, not my cup of tea but hugely popular.

The Stig Larsson books - girl with the dragon tattoo are very popular, a bit violent in places but not too bad for a 16 year old - think the bedroom scenes are pretty minimal, iirc.

Apart from the brutal rape. Not that it's out of context, and at 16 he should be old enough to read it. Although I must be in a minority, I found the series to be waaaay overhyped.

How about taking him into a charity shop and giving him a fiver? Hospice ones are usually cheapst, round here they're between two books for 50p and £1 each.
Unless I say otherwise 'you' means the general you not you specifically.
