  • For a 16 year old, I'd definitely recommend The Hunger Games series, as suggested by a PP. I'm by no means a teenager but they are 'young adult' fiction and I've just read the whole trilogy (finished last week!), very well written and interesting. I think some of the suggestions may be a bit inappropriate but the Huger Games trilogy is aimed at people his age, and I think he'd like it if he liked Harry Potter and Percy Jackson (which I also enjoy!). The link to the first book on Amazon is here, lots of good reviews: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Hunger-Games-Suzanne-Collins/dp/1407109081/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1316779454&sr=8-1

My sister sent me two lovely books for my birthday, along with a CD.

    Two by Rosamund Lupton

    Sister, and Afterwards

It mean't a lot to me, as hard to explain, but is perfect for me at the moment. My beautiful sister, some books are very special to me.
Haven't read Afterwards yet, but I'm not sure Sister's any good for a boy ... Absolutely compelling read for me though! Also a gift from my sister.

At the age of 16 surely he shouldn't still be limited to the child/teen section of the library? Encourage him to wander over to the adult section and try out some new things. Most good libraries will be split into sections by genre, so he can try out sci-fi, fantasy, crime, historical fiction etc, and he can learn what sort of books he likes for himself.
  • Definitely the Dark tower books by stephen king. There are 7 books and the last one is out next year. The first of the series is called The Gunslinger and is the thinnest book out of the series so if he doesn't take a liking then no need to buy the other fat ones hehe
  • My 16 year old son loves Game of Thrones series - yes there are adult themes but really, at 16 he could have sex if he wanted :) He also loves George Orwell especially 1984 and surprisingly has just read a Margaret Atwood 'Oryx and Crake' a fantastically imaginative book. I agree, at 16 most readers are wandering through all sorts and shouldn't be confined to 'teen' books. I'm just amazed he's still such an avid reader!
  • Darren Shan - not that I've read them, but boys seem to love them!

If he likes "Indiana Jones" type books, try James Rollins :)

Another vote for Robert Muchamore - the Cherub series. I'm 19 and still get really excited when the new ones come out! The books can be found very cheaply on Amazon - the first one is The Recruit, it's orange - and everyone I've given a copy to (5 people, aged 13-20) has really loved it.

The really good part is that there are 13 Cherub books and 3? Henderson's Boys books (the spin off) so far, so when he loves them (not if :D) he can be occupied for a good while.

My other favourite books are 1984 and Inkheart, which is an odd fantasy book about a book by Cornelia Funke, beautifully translated from the German.

I found the Alex Rider series similar to the Cherub series, but less well written and not half as interesting. My sister (15) loves Cherub, and I believe she also reads HIVE, as recommended above.

Darren Shan is awesome too, and there are lots to read, but perhaps a little young for a 16 year old. It's a strange fantasy/horror mix which does really work.

Septimus Heap, widely available from libraries, Alex Rider adventures - I'm 41 and like them, but they might be a bit young for a 16 year old.
Skulduggery Pleasant by Derek Landry is funny, has quite bit of fighting in it, and some pretty good plotlines.

Lord of the Rings is great, but can be dry and tedious in places, tbh!

If he didn't like the "grown up" Terry Pratchett, how about "The Wee Free Men" series - very funny and definitely very Pratchett, but less plays on words and a bit more action.

Maybe the Twilight Series and Vampire Diaries - so he can impress the girls with his knowledge of them ;) They aren't badly written, not my cup of tea but hugely popular.

The Stig Larsson books - girl with the dragon tattoo are very popular, a bit violent in places but not too bad for a 16 year old - think the bedroom scenes are pretty minimal, iirc.
