My son's a couple of years younger but a strong reader, he likes all the Alex Rider (Stormbreaker) books, the Cherub ones (both modern and the WW2 ones), he sometimes will read the Vampirates ones, and he's just started reading Halo books because he likes the games. The worst battle with him is getting him to try something new! :D Does your son have any favourite games that might have spin off novels, or films that have come from books?

depending on what hes after Trudi Canavan does some good magic based fantasy book,

Sci Fi - all depends on what hes into, Halo or Mass Effect books if he has played the games, Star War have loads of books creating a extended universe, otherwise some hard scifi Adrian Reynolds does some good stuff

What about Game of Thrones, my 18 yr old cousin has just read this and loved it.
  • How about The Passage by Justin Cronin? it's not specifically aimed at teens though.

I read it earlier this year and thought it was fantastic - nice and thick to keep him going all holiday too :)

He's old enough to read adult books, surely?

The crime novels of Ian Rankin are in plain language, fast moving, page-turning and amusing. Rankin also writes 'Quick Reads' - 100 pages with big writing and short chapters - like 'Cool Head', a story about ganglands, which is a great way of making the transition from 'Harry Potter' to adult books.

There are authors who write both young-adult fiction and adult fiction and there is a long list of them to plough through!

Will he be considering English at A level? Would he enjoy a classic?

Failing that: R A Salvatore, T Pratchett for fantasy.

Would he like something he's seen as a movie? Bourne Identity books, or Shutter Island.

    Sherlock Holmes collection?

How about the hunger games? The knife of never letting go series. The gone series already suggested but IMO not as good as the hunger games series
