I'm avoiding being a beta tester for HTC and therefore all the issues I've already listed.

You are assuming they fix the issues and the patches are released by HTC and the networks. Just because a products been out a while it does not mean they have fixed the problems.

HTC may be better, but Sony almost never release phone firmware fixed and jsut the occasional upgrade after they ship them.

The HTC phones all run the same Android software, any problems will be related to the hardware itself, you can't fix hardware faults no matter how many firmware upgrades you throw at the phone. The Sensation XE looks awesome, and you get a free set of Beats headphones, what more could you want

I love my Desire HD and have had no problems at all with it.

I'd previously had a Wildfire and the speed difference was awesome when I upgraded, although I had no complaints about the Wildfire.

I upgraded for the larger screen.

Not at all. I'm going on the information supplied by the guys over on XDA (thats their claim)

The software (according to them) was patched to prevent the overheating issues. Several other niggles were also addressed by HTC on their phones.

Sorry to re-iterate this, but I don't want to be a beta tester for new phone. I'll leave that up to those who want to pay a premium when a new product is released. I'll come along later, get the product at a reduced price and have less 'teething troubles'. I was trying to establish (which I've now done) which 'current' HTC offerings fit that criteria.
  • TBH the desire HD is a great phone in my opinion. I keep up with new phones but not soo much that I'll buy the latest one as soon as it comes out, I usually buy a new phone every 18 months and really research it before doing so (xda being my source). DHD might not be the most upto date and is only single core but so far I am still very happy with it, the screen is great for watching tv shows/movies and is small enough to put in pocket.

I got a bit annoyed by Htcsence.com not working for the first 12 months I owned the phone and their online support were completely useless! I Submitted tickets telling them it didnt work and explaining all the steps I'd taken to try and solve it. Every reply would suggest trying something Id said I had already tried! I had made it very clear what I had already tried and each reply would just suggest I try the things I had just said I had tried, got soo annoyed I just closed the ticket saying they were useless, this happened 3 times!

OP have you tried cnet, trusted reviews, the AV forums, or phones 4u? There are no doubt countless other better sites also but these are what I tend to flick through.

I'd also recommend making a mental note of what you need the phone for, theres no point paying more for a handset designed to work well for gamers when you don't, likewise if your after a handset that is great for the camera or music look for a handset with good results for those aspects. What works for one person may not work for you.
  • I don't know why he's even bothered asking, he seems to have made up his mind already
  • HTC HD2 is lovely. What do you want to use it for mainly?

This are the things I'm concerned about and which I've been trying to establish. So many thanks for the comments :)

    .

Great advice and exactly what I was looking for. I have been looking on all the sites suggested and once again, many thanks for the reply.

He is a She and I've not made my mind up. I suggest you read the question I asked.

I sought " reliable truthful comments" about HTC phones . I wanted the facts about the problems, not to be sold one ;)

Your missing my point. You would not be a "beta tester" as you put it (early adopter is a better phrase) but you may still have the issues on a phone.

Software is patched (if at all ) by (in this case) HTC, it's then passed to the networks to test and release. Not all networks release all patches and most networks modify the firmware for there own use (either by branding it or limiting features). Just because a vendor releases a new version it does not mean the networks will supply it to their customers. Lets say HTC embedded a Skype client in it, most networks would remove it or not approve it, as they don't want Skype potentially taking their voice call revenue.

If you get a Vodafone, O2, Orange, T-Mobile and a Sim Free Desire HD and look at the firmware they are unlikely to all be onthe same revision as different networks release different versions depening on their wishes. The Sim Free one will get all upgrades as HTC approve them, the others need to wait for network approved version before they get an upgrade.

It's possible that even if you get a brand new Desire HD today it will still have the early firmware revision on it, it *should* be updated either over the air or via a download but theres no guarantee any fix will address all the issues, so even though it's 12 months old it could still have the same firmware as one bought on release day.

It's also possible that any patch may create more problems. The last June/July patch from Vodafone broke the GPS on many phones and that took a few months to fix.

I understand you don't want to be a beta tester, but often there is not a lot you can do. Some bugs never get fixed, others are created by bug fixes themselves. You may not like Apple, but they are the only company who consistantly update *all* their current devices when they release a patch as they have a better control on the device through iTunes (and yes thats a different story..)
