I wouldn't totally discount little cars, I got rid of a big 1.7 diesel estate 18 months ago and replaced it with a Panda! It was the only car I could afford brand new, and I was apprehensive, but even my 1.1 goes pretty fast and is quite capable of keeping up with motorway traffic. It also feels pretty spacious inside, though baby seat and pram will be a squeeze for the first year or two!
My other half hated the idea of me buying it, then I let him have a go, and he was rather impressed.
Another night of little sleep here, think we had a definite move downwards (though not sure if it is a permanent one). Weeing every few minutes till about half 2, and my hips or pelvis making some lovely clicking noises because I dared to walk round Sainsburys earlier that day.0 -
Good news.. DH just called from garage, it IS repairable. Yeeha! I think he is relieved BIG TIME! Now just need to book it in end of next week to get fixed, and should be OK to drive in the interim. Mortified that i'll have to drive around in a crashed car that everyone will think i did tho!Married 13/03/10 #1 DD born 13/01/12!!

Good news.
Cant tell you how to live your life but if it was me and my partner.. we'd never get a hire purchase cause it costs you soo much more.... and all you are doing is putting of the payment till years later.
All debt does is makes you worser off, doesn't help. Never had a brand new car in my life. closest thing i came to was my current 05 honda civic 1.6 litre.... took me 2 years to save up for it and 4 years on never a problem. Cars are more reliable now so getting a 5 year old car and savings thousands as opposed to get getting hire purchase and spending more is a reasonable option.
Just a thought, but obviously people live their lives differently and just because I think it wastes money doesn't mean there one way. Just being northern hate paying more for something which is what debt really is.. you pay a hefty premium and take on a risk to have things early.
Also economical cars are the ones with smaller engines usually... i.e. diesel 1.4 litre can get something like 70 mpg. And they are usually cheaper to buy too.. so in terms of finances... a 4-5 year old 'mini' car is cheaper on gas, cheaper on insurance, cheaper to buy and generally just as reliable (if you get a german/japanese car at least lol).0 -
Hi ladies
Kira - I managed to crash my car a month ago and waiting on the dreaded insurance company so know how you feel, they said I will lose 3 years no claims but I don't have to pay the excess as we aren't getting our car fixed through the insurance as luckily our car has only got scratches on the front bumper!! Luckily my boys were ok though as they were in the car with me!! I hope you get it all sorted soon. Xx:)DS1 10yrsDS2 7yrs :)DS3 born March 2012

As i said, my car is quite small and is very economical! Its a 1.6 diesel £20 to tax for the year, 60 odd MPG in reality etc etc. Not a big flash jobby at all. And i agree, i hate paying vast amounts of interest, so went with one that gave me a rate lower than any CC or loan, and a LP rather than straight HP, so i could pay a big wodge upfront to minimise the borrowings. Plus spent 4+ weeks researching cars and options and prices, and therefore being an evil MSE haggle demon, got it new for less than the cost of buying a used one 1-2 years old, so ended up avoiding the forecourt depreciation entirely.Married 13/03/10 #1 DD born 13/01/12!!

Sounds good then.. was figuring you was the typical 'buy it now try pay it later' bunch. Most times that ends in disastor.. knew a girl who was 30k in debt with cc and then justified buying a 14k vauxhall tigra on credit oO... As she 'needed it' for her banking job.
She got pregnant 1 year later and being a 2 seater wasn't suitable for newborn so lost a ton more on it. She still in debt i believe, shame as she good mate, just terrible with money.0 -

Morning ladies.
Couldn't sleep last night due to partiers up stairs, even the police turned up and said someone had complained about the noise, so we'l probably get the blame for that even though it wasn't us  When I did finally get comfy, bump starts to do somersaults and really creep me out, eventually had to be naughty and sleep on my right side to get him to slow down slightly. Tired today, and cranky. OH doesn't start work until later so surprise surprise he's still in bed, I really want to get in to the bedroom and give it a good clean and fling some things out, but can't while he's sleeping. Oh so mad today, hormones are bad.The frontier is never somewhere else. And no stockades can keep the midnight out.0 -

Another one here with a rubbish night's sleep! Just when I thought I was doing so well too! Went to bed around 10.30, which is usual for me, woke up at 1.30, awake until 3, dozed for an hour then woke up again at 4, then fell asleep but felt like I hadn't when my alarm went off at 6.30! Early night tonight methinks...
Lola - I have updated the list with your pink bump, congratulations
Flutterby - welcome to the threadLet us know your due date and someone can add you on to the list if you want?
Kira - great news about your car! And that your OH is going to help with the increased costs etc! He definitely needs to get rid of his toy i think, if not only as punishment!
missymoo - hope the next 8 days go quickly for you, if nothing happens in the meantime, and you manage to get more comfortable!
I went round to see my friend last night who's little girl is now 8 weeks, she is absolutely adorable! Although she is suffering lots with colic and constipation (the baby, not my friend) so it seems to be a bit of a trying time for my friend! But I am also pleased as she told me that she is now planning to take longer off work, going back towards the end of April rather than the beginning of March, so I will have a maternity buddy for a bit longer than I originally thought
She only lives around the corner from me so we will be going to the same playgroups and stuff together, and I'm really looking forward to having someone around to spend time with!
