Just getting into my Kindle now. Its all charged up and I'm part way through reading the instructions (which, fortunately, they have right there as a "book" programmed into the device itself) - so feel competent to read a book that is "stored" on it and have now got to figure out how to "transfer" over any books I notice that I want to have on my Kindle.
Its obviously still "early technology" - as its not yet had the design changed to be that "hand-friendly". The page turning "buttons" are right at the side where I wish to hold it - so am experimenting with physically how to hold it - which I think might result in leaning it on a cushion on my lap to read from it for long periods. To date - verdict is the technology is good enough to get it (subject to it being the 3G model) - but it will be better in a coupla years (when I anticipate it will be more "hand-friendly"/lighter/with the qwerty part of the keyboard being a larger & roll-out thing - rather than fixed beneath the screen as it is currently). Most of the time most of us will only require to have the page turning mode readily accessible - so the rest could be stashed as a pull-out inside the gadget. Still - the better design might not turn up for another 5 years or so - so its good enough to get now is my first impression.
...will update more when I've had the time to thoroughly learn my way round it and download a couple of books...0 -
Anybody who bought the HP Touchpad a couple of months back, may be interested to know they can put the Kindle app on it for free. :j

Thats an awful shame that you don't find it hand friendly as I was most impressed that it is designed for left and right handed people with the page turning buttons on both sides. I hold it towards the bottom and use my thumb to turn pages. I'm sure you'll get the hang of it very soon and downloading books is really very easy no matter which version you have.
The new all singing all dancing kindle is out in US next month with touch screen instead of a keyboard. The idea behind a kindle is to be small and lightweight and having a pull out keyboard would be going backword when touch screens are the way forward with most technology.

I have a kindle and don't have wifi enabled so this may help ceridwen and any others, I don't have the 3G version.
In amazon when you find a book you like click the 'download to pc' option instead of wirelessly to kindle. In 'my documents' file on the pc I have a kindle file where I store all my ebooks. Then when I connect the kindle using the USB and copy the files across by 'drag and drop'. Obviously this is for when wireless/3G doesn't work.
I love my kindle - I'm rereading all the old classics. I've used calibre for a couple of conversions but with the amount of free content you can find I haven't spent any money ( apart from the kindle itself!).0 -

I've just recently got myself a Kindle as I've got a rather nasty shoulder injury that wont be healed until I have an operation next June, and I was finding it too painful to hold books for more than a few mins - Horrible when I enjoy reading for hours at a time. Not had so much as a twinge from my shoulder after finishing 5 books so far, so very happy with how light it is, and how easy it is to use.
I'm also really happy about how much free stuff is available, got around 250 books on it now without paying a penny, I'm on a pretty limited income (bought the kindle it'self using amazon vouchers I earned online) so I'm glad I didn't have to pay a fortune out to stock it up with books.
Are there any good free fantasy books available? Or any other fiction that people recommend? I'm really not a fan of murder mystery type books though.0 -

Still reading my way through the Kindle manual - and have now discovered that I can read the "pages" on there in landscape mode (rather than having to have them in "portrait" mode) if I want to. Thinks - will probably do things that way then - and will suit better how I am used to holding things.
Got as far as the bit about Wireless or 3G little symbol up at top right of screen - and thinking "Hmm...I dont have that...." - but guessing it will only be meant to show up when actually downloading a book anyways....
Give me time..give me time...it takes a techno-idiot like I am a whiles to get my head round how to do owt "technical". But - if I come back at the end of this going "Yay - and I've downloaded some books" then that means its easy enough for most people to do then:rotfl::rotfl:0 -
I have a couple of tips re kindle:
if you buy a book and change your mind then you can get a refund. I have done this twice and both a couple of days after download, both times I skimmed through and decided that I didn`t like the book
I often buy normal amazon books at 1p but sat up the other day and realised that they actually cost £2.81 (with p and p) so I usually look for the cost of a kindle download as it can be very much cheaper
I love my kindle, same as I love ordinary books and there is room for both in my life. I now have 140 downloads and 135 were free and many would have cost a lot of money. I also have a little slip in light on the cover corner, so if my kindle is charged and we have an evening power cut, I will still be able to read0
