Kindle Books - free or cheap old style related

I go to the Amazon site at least once a week to check on free books for the kindle - I just type in free books and although you get the books you can buy that tell you how to get free books, does anyone actually buy them, if you go through the list you will find which books are currently free - I just 'buy' any I like the sound of. Its amazing what books they do have for free, not just the old classics but books published this year and not just novels. I have got about 1500 books on it, plus pdfs - saves me printing them out and much easier to read on kindle rather than pc. I have bought via kindle if there is a book I specificly want other wise as said just go to Amazon.
I did buy the cover with the light, at the time only ones available were Amazons own, but have to say the leather is really nice. First one did not work properly, contacted them, the replacement arrived next day, then I just had to send old one back with the label they provided - sent it back in its box.
I downloaded calibre and it has a great search mode, just put in the author you are looking for and it will find all the books available around the world and puts them in price order.
I do make sure I keep the wireless off unless I have things to download, but as someone said very handy for a powercut as still can read without worrying about lighting candles etc. I bought a solar charger for my Blackberry ( not easy finding emergency chargers for it a reasonable price , got the car one as well, ) and MP3 player and have yet to see if it will work with the kindle - they all use the exact same fitting.
Don't know if my little stand idea any use to anyone, but at times even my kindle which is so light can be to heavy or hands to sore to hold. So I had a small wooden artists easel, brand new, I actually got bundled in with something I got from a fellow freecycler ( she wanted everything to go in one lot) and I found that if I put my kindle on it, on my over bed table its the perfect height for me to read, bliss.
I agree the experimental browser is slow and would only use it if every other option was unavailable but still great to know its there. Audio books sound quite well on it, although the text to speech voice is something I would only listen to if I was desperate.
I still do buy 'real books' but am so glad I bought the kindle as it does mean I can read when not up to using a book. To me it certainly was worth the money.
Right off to see if any more gems to download free from Amazon

I finally cracked.
I'm an avid reader and pretty much always read in bed last thing. But more than once I've found myself nodding off and only just waking up in time to stop my laptop sliding off the side of the bed.
So given that the new Kindle is currently selling at £89... which is wa-a-a-ay less than the cost of my laptop I decided that I'd rather risk the Kindle.
Blimey! What a nifty machine!
You know, they had these "information pad thingies" that Star Trek crew members would pass around between them way back when, and I remember thinking to myself "one day..." Well, that day is here
The "help" come "getting started" paperwork that comes with the Kindle is about as much use as a chocolate fire guard. My Kindle went into screen save mode while I was setting up (I couldn't remember or even find the password to access my home network) and the paper getting started was no help whatsoever. I finished up having to log into Amazon via my laptop and track down the help pages to learn how to get out of screen save... (press the power button!)... Having all the help in text form on the Kindle is fine and dandy - but if you can't read it because you don't know how to get out of screen save...
But otherwise - it's magic. I finished up reading much later than usual last night just because it was so novel reading a novel this wayHi, I'm a Board Guide on the Old Style and the Consumer Rights boards which means I'm a volunteer to help the boards run smoothly and can move and merge posts there. Glad you like it, Squeaky, I've got the same model as you.
It does get easier to use, once you get used to it. Like everything I guess
Have you found the nifty little bookmark yet?0 -

I haven't found the quick way to get to bookmarked web pages. Have to go through "search" and then type in https://www.g to get to my gutenberg link, for example.
I haven't read all of the help file yet. Naught me! But once I got the thing working I was too busy reading my novel
So I reckon I've still got plenty of reading and "playing" to do to find out how to get the best out of it. But I'm grabbing books from Amazon (free ones) and from gutenberg - have set collections up, and really about the only thing I need to crack is how to shift "kindle books for PC" across to my Kindle. Just copying the gutenberg sourced files across doesn't work. Well, you've done alot, I havn't been to gutenberg yet, although i have heard of it.
I didn't mean the internet type bookmark though, I meant the old fashioned book mark, where you keep your page in the book. I'm still mightly impressed by that. Not that I ever ever do that to real books, mind. I use a proper paper bookmark.
If you havn't a clue what I'm on about, it looks as if the top corner of a page is folded down
Oh and my Kindle has lost the WiFi password as well, after I'd typed it in. So I've got to fish that out again. I'm going to have to write it in my address book I think - a proper paper one. How things have changed, as you say!!!0 -
I've never bothered with bookmarked pages. I'm currently reading novels and it opens on the last page I was reading. I suppose once I start using recipe books that I'll want to bookmark a page or two, so I'll need to hit the help file first
For a guess - hit the right arrow and pick bookmark this page from the menu? Or is it on the main "menu" button? Not that it matters - I'll find it when I need it. No point in trying to memorise something I may not need for months and. almost certainly, will have forgotten by then
As for gutenberg (Link is in the first post) - most, but by no means all of the books are quite old because they must be out of copyright. There are a few modern ones though where current authors have made them available to get exposure in the hopes that you will want to read (and pay for) their other books.Hi, I'm a Board Guide on the Old Style and the Consumer Rights boards which means I'm a volunteer to help the boards run smoothly and can move and merge posts there.
