Getting an electrician in how much?

  • I think you said the old cable is 2.5? way too small for any shower stronger than a handwash unit! £80 seems a bit cheap too be honest, make sure you get an installation certificate before payment and that the engineer is either registered with NICEIC or NAPIT etc and can self cert for part P (if he is he'll know what this means) if not he must by law inform your local councils building control before and on completion. A new one way RCD Con unit, cable and isolation switch itself likely to come to about £50 plus over half a days wage about £100

It would of burnt out by now & most likely in minutes if it was 2.5mm

Its most likely 6 or 8.

£80 is totally wrong. Impossible in fact.

    £300+ all day long.

We put the shower in October 2010, a handful of times it tripped, we used to go go downstairs put the switch back on and continue to shower, the triton shower people came and said it is the wiring not the shower, it has the wire in it strong enough to run a hand wash shower if you are lucky:rotfl:

It is 2.5 needs to be 6 or 8, the £80 guy is installing an 6 and replacing the wire from the shower to the pull cord ( we have to take 2 or three tiles of and putting them back on, we are not paying for that we are doing it ourselves) he says the job is basically upgrading the wire, he is coming alone and not looking at spending more than 1/2 hours here. Total £80

  • The £80 sounds too cheap

Did the guy come out and look at the job?

Is the cheap guy registered? (see below)

The cable is around £3 per metre, the switch £10-£12 or so.

How long do you need for the cable run- if it's long then you could need 16mm- I did a shower that was 28m and 10.8 kW and it took 16mm as the cable was ran past loft insulation (if you have loft insualtion this has to be taken into account as it derates the current capacity of the cable)
If it's cheap it's cheap for a reason.

You should use a competent person for the work, links below

  • from what you are saying the 2.5 is just from switch to shower, but a 10mm cable is already in to the switch from con unit?
  • I recently requested a quote to install a electric shower by upgrading my existing 8.5kw to 10.5kw which entails increasing the cable size. To re-run the cable with new RCD and install a shower I supplied was £300 + VAT (quoted around half a days work for two guys). if you need a new run of 10mm2, they are not cheap, about £50 for a 15m run.

The £80 electrician was p part registered, registered with the council 'buy with confidence' had the NICEIC, he changed the wiring just from the shower pull cord switch to the shower, he laid new cable in the attic, we took off 4 tiles for him and we put them back up, he ended up charging £110 because he went off to buy another isolation switch as the old one had had it. I cleaned up after him so that he could go and do his other job and we were all happy.

He did say we need for £300 a consumer unit, tests all sockets etc, RCD due socket braker and get a certificate that all wiring is safe, said that was a lot, he said it is a day work (he works alone) £300 is the whole total price, I said we shall get back to him.

  • Did he change the wiring from the shower switch to the consumer unit

Does the consumer unit have an RCD?
