Getting an electrician in how much?

Just had the triton shower guy here, he says shower fine, wiring wrong, it is a 10.5kw shower installed running ans working since last Oct but triton man says that is running on wrong wiring cable, that it could have burnt the house down, that we are lucky to be alive anyway....

Now what do I ask an electrician that he has in qualifications? I don't want to hire someone to do the job and end up on one of those tv shows that did not check the credentials and made the house worse etc so how much?

I have 3 coming on free call out and free estimates, shall I take the cheapest one? Is that wise? Do electricians have to show me proof of their expertise?

Sorry for the maybe daft questions but never had an electrician out, OH is petrified we will have to rewire the whole house:eek:

Triton shower man says it is vital to get in an electrician and change the wiring to be able to run the shower at 10.5kw, that it would niot neccesarily have affected any other parts of the wiring of the house.

Can you tell I am in a panic thinking me and the kids could have been burnt down?

  • Make sure who ever you go with gives you a quote in writing and not an estimate, then they can not start adding on tenners here and there.

Now the electrician of this morning quoted £427:eek: that is vast amount more than the first one, even though he kept increasing it he never got past £160, all it is replacing the wire and threading it through straight up to the bathroom, it is a 2 and needs to be a 10 so much thicker, other than that cannot see how it could possible cost £427:eek:

Can you post a breakdown of the quote? If your fuse board is old and earthing not in place to gas and water, it could well add up to this, but without more info we can't advise you

Thank you for the opportunity to provide you with a quotation to re-wire
    your electric shower.

We are quoting for the following.

To provide new 10mm cabling from the consumer unit to a new isolation
switch and then to the shower. Cable to be enclosed in trunking where
    visible.

A new 45amp MCB in the consumer unit.

All testing, certification, and notification to building control.

Total price is £427.00 (no additional vat)

This taken from the email, put in shower will not take the 105kw needs new 10mm wiring, fuse box direct above the bath, straight through routing, into back of shower (has advised some tiles to come off) or he can up to the attic and bring the wiring down with the wire coming down to the shower?

Seems madness to go up to come down

it has to go up so that the pull cord isolator can be put in the ceiling

PS i hope the fuse board is not directly above the bath!

Sorry - this isnt at all clear. Can you clarify if this is what is written on the quote verbatim, or you? Can you retype so its clear?

The quote is from the email he sent me not me no, via email, since we have had others and one quoted £80 so we are going with him, £80 to £427 amazing:eek:

Part of the Furniture 10,000 Posts Name Dropper Combo Breaker
What kind of cable is there at the moment? If it's not sufficient for your 10.5kW shower, why not just downgrade the shower to an 8.5kW or 9.5kW as appropriate?

Did you replace a previous 8.5 or 9.5 with the 10.5?
