My husband wanted to apply for a job whilst I was doing my masters. He found one paying well that would have been perfect. On the advert:
"this position is only available to women or those with a disability"

I have seen several like this. So tell me phil. How can we get a highly educated, very clever, hard working non disabled male into employment?

I know several disabled people of varying disability. All have had no problems getting jobs. In fact they seem to find it easier as some companies like to employ disabled people as it makes them look nice.

I have never seen positions targetted only at disabled people. I am sure your husband will find other positions (as he has lots of good qualities) and I am not saying disabled people should exclude non- disabled people.

The whole idea of pertected disabled people from discrimination is that a lot of employers see disabled and think they will make lesser employees bacause they are disabled or they think they will be more problematic to employ than a non-disabled person.

I do think that moreso now than ever they're companies are trying to employ more disabled people to even numbers out more and with discrimination policies it's difficult to not employ someone because they're disabled. So i think in terms of getting more disabled people into work, we're on the way there already.

I dont think you get any favours as a disabled person.

The last interview I went to I did not even get any adjustments at interview, so I am not so sure myself.

Above a certain number of employees (20?) a certain percentage of the workforce must now be registered disabled (it's more complicated than that, but it's the gist of it). It's not actually down to anti-discrimination, it's a specific law introducing a quota for larger companies.

3% of staff for firms over 3000 staff. I dont thing it is expressly you have to be registered disabled as not every disabled person is registered.

It is a patterned theory of equality. The idea is 3 per cent of people in the general population are diasbled so the workforce should reflect that.

On the 3% mark, not even the civil service or local government meet that figure, so what hope do private firms have?
